THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 17, 2025

Charlie Forster

Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. Charlie, 7-under for the tournament. How do you assess your performance over the first two rounds?

CHARLIE FORSTER: Yeah, it was good. It was good. Obviously I've played these courses a couple of times when I was a bit younger and I remember them being pretty tough to score. My game plan was just to keep it in the fairways, keep the ball out of the bunkers. I kind of did that.

Yesterday, I don't think I found a bunker yesterday off the tee. Hit it in a couple today off the tee, which just led to bogeys.

That's what you've got to do around this course is just keep your tee shot on grass. You can even hit it in the rough and have a better angle at times from the fairway. You can play it in a couple different ways, and I'm learning the course the more and more I play.

Q. Your prior experience has obviously helped you to this total so far?

CHARLIE FORSTER: Yeah, I played it about three years ago, so the game was a bit different. I'd like to say I've come along a little bit from there. But I sort of knew roughly where the misses were around the greens from some bad memories and from some good memories. But yeah, you've just got to keep it on the right side of the hole and just keep your ball in play, really, off the tee.

Q. Obviously you're heading into the match play now. Match play is a very different format to stroke play. Do you change your approach to the golf course given the change of format?

CHARLIE FORSTER: Not really. I just try and plot it around. In match play I like to make my opponent make the mistakes. I try my hardest to keep it in play off the tie and just try and tire them with consistent drives, tee shots, and sort of let them chase a few of the pins. I always say if you lose to a birdie, then it's fair play, but when you make a bogey it's kind of annoying, so just try and keep them off the card, and yeah.

Q. Have you played much at Royal Cinque Ports as well prior to this week?

CHARLIE FORSTER: Yeah, so I played the Southeast Links. I played that one year. I forgot what year it was. Obviously I was sort of familiar with the two courses and had a good practice round with my teammate and a few of my other buddies. It was good fun there, just kind of learning how to play in the wind again. Especially coming over from America it's a bit of a different game.

It was good to kind of adapt very quickly, and yeah, it was good fun.

Q. What would it mean to you to take it all the way here at the Amateur Championship?

CHARLIE FORSTER: Yeah, it would be really good. Obviously that's the goal for all of us playing in this event, but just got to stay in the present, take each game as it comes, and if you win a few games and it starts to get to that point, then you can maybe think about that, but just got to try and take each game as it comes and try and win them.
