HSBC CHAMPIONSHIPS

June 16, 2025

Cameron Norrie

London, England, UK

Queens Club

Press Conference

J. MENSIK/C. Norrie

7-6, 1-6, 6-1

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. Cam, you're in control, you've got two set points. What goes through your mind there, and how frustrating is it to lose from that position?

CAMERON NORRIE: In the first set, you mean?

Yeah, yeah. No, it was a couple points in there, and he hit a good return at 6-4 and on the back of the line, and I missed a forehand by nothing and he served well.

Yeah, credit to him. I felt like he was the better player in the first set. Then I continued in the second. He dropped a little. We played a really physical game, I think it was 1-All, or 2-1 me in the second set, and I felt like he dropped. I just didn't serve well in the third and he ran away with it.

We played every tough game except for the last one and he won all of them. A good first match on the grass, and he served unbelievably well. I knew he had a good serve. I didn't think it was really that good, but he's a good player, tough player. I'm real impressed with him.

Q. For Wimbledon now, how are you going to do it? You going to play next week? What are you thinking?

CAMERON NORRIE: I'd like to play Eastbourne, yeah. That's my plan. I'd like to do that so I get some more matches.

Yeah, it was a great match today, first match on the grass, getting a lot of serve-and-return reps. I returned unbelievably well. I had a lot of chances. Didn't take them.

Yeah, there was a few points in it, and that was a grass court match today, and credit to him for staying tough.

Yeah, play doubles tomorrow with Jacob and enjoy that one, and just try and play as many points as I can the rest of the week here and get ready for Eastbourne.

Q. His serve, 20 aces today. He's the kind of player at Wimbledon, not many people will want to face him early rounds at Wimbledon, are they?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, he's a great player, great backhand, great serve. Forehand is tricky at times. Yeah, he's obviously not had too many grass court seasons under his belt, but he won Miami. He has a great game for grass.

He's going to be tough wherever he plays. Can be Wimbledon or anywhere. Yeah.

Q. Just off the back of the French Open run you had, obviously going a bit deeper than you had before, how did you find switching from clay to grass? What did those days off after look like?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, it was a quick transition. I went and chilled with my parents a little bit and rested. Yeah, it was good fun.

I played a lot of grass court tennis over the years, and I was just training at NTC and practicing as much as I can on the grass. Yeah, it was maybe a little bit too soon to play the first week.

Yeah, it was good fun in Paris, and I felt I was enjoying the whole practice and lead-up leading in. I enjoyed the match today. It was a pity I didn't win the match, but it's exactly the match I want to play. I played a really good match, and he was better than me. Well deserved.

Q. On a separate topic, we have just been speaking to Dan Evans. Unless he wins this week, he will need a wildcard for Wimbledon. You know Dan. You've seen his level. He deserves it, doesn't he? Given what he has done for British tennis, he would deserve that position?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, he fought even for me. When I was in juniors and he was training around and he was coming up the ranks, he was always a big inspiration to me, very relatable. Andy was on a completely different path.

Very relatable. We were training together, and I was always trying to -- yeah, was always competing with him and we played on tour a long time together.

I think the win today was well-deserved, and I think he enjoyed that one a lot. It was nice to see him enjoying the tennis a lot today. For me, yeah, for me he deserves one. If I was giving the wildcards, I'd give him one.

Yeah, he's obviously one of my favorite players to watch when he's moving well and playing like that. I came out on the balcony today and watched him. I think he was serving for the first set. That 6-5 game, he had an unreal long rally, and he won that one. It was so good to see him chipping the backhand, hitting over the backhand. Moving around, coming in, finishing at the net.

If I was going to watch Wimbledon as a fan, I would like to go watch Dan. I don't see any reason why not he shouldn't get one.
