Quick Quotes
Q. (Indiscernible) in the bunker?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah.
Q. With the grass it was on, it was hard to make out what it was.
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, it was in the face, in the thick rough basically -- from the fairway as you look at it, it would be the face of the bunker. I could hardly stand. I basically had both hands pretty much on the shaft of the lob wedge. To be honest, I was actually delighted to have putter for the next shot. Yeah, that fast putt surprised me how quick it was. The greens have been slower today, but that putt had -- honestly, I don't know it was that fast, to be honest. It wouldn't surprise me if there's been a lot of guys that are hitting it six foot past on that green.
Yeah, it was a shame to make double there. I feel like I played so nice up to that point. Following on from that, I'm proud of how I played the last three holes.
I missed the fairway on 18, but I felt like I hit a good tee shot. Didn't have a very nice bounce. A lot of the tee shots have been landing very soft today, and that one seemed to have a pretty nasty kick into the face of the bunker.
But to make 4 in the end and finish the day 2-under, I'm very happy with.
Q. Do you think it's fair? Do you enjoy this?
TYRRELL HATTON: For the most part, yeah. I'd say it is. I personally don't agree -- I don't see the need to have so much rough in the side slopes of the bunkers. The bunkers, the faces on them are so severe, if you go in them off the tee, you're not really reaching the green for the most part. Certainly around the green, if you go in the bunker and you're short-sided anyway, they've done a hell of a job raking them this week because they're so flat, and almost certainly you feel like you're on a bit of a downslope, so they're still hard to play out of. You're really struggling to hit a bunker shot close anyway. So if the ball trickled back in the bunker, I don't see -- I would say that's probably a bit more fair than -- I've had two experiences this week of staying in the face.
But that's how they've set it up this year, and it doesn't matter if I don't agree with it or every player in the field doesn't agree with it. Everyone has to deal with it. It's just how it is.
Q. What are some things that you do to maybe avoid looking at what's at stake tomorrow, or do you like looking at the big picture?
TYRRELL HATTON: Well, I mean, I knew at the start of the year and certainly last year when I signed with LIV that the majors were going to be very important for me. But yeah, I'd love to go out there tomorrow and have another day like today and finish off a strong week for World Ranking points, Ryder Cup points, Race to Dubai points. There's a lot to play for.
At the end of the day, I just have to go out there and try my best, and I can't really worry about that. I just have to focus on one shot at a time, and that's what I'll try and do tomorrow.
Q. Do you feel like the U.S. Open is tailor made for your game?
TYRRELL HATTON: Sometimes. I did today. No, I've struggled this year really off the tee since the LIV season started, to be honest. So yeah, I had a great week at Desert Classic and whatever, but since then I feel like I've struggled, and that's been one thing that's probably held me back from finishing higher up in the tournaments I've played so far.
Last week I feel like I started to drive the ball a bit better and see the usual shape of the ball moving left to right, and just taking that into this week and trying to keep doing the same things, and so far I feel like I've driven the ball pretty well. Certainly today was great, and I'm happy with that.
Q. The leaderboard has a lot of non-major winners. It's not as if it's Rory, Scottie, Jon up there. Does that make a difference to your confidence or your mindset?
TYRRELL HATTON: No, I don't think it makes a difference whether you've -- yeah, I'm sure if you've won majors in the past, you know that you can get over the line in a major, but still, at the end of the day, it's another golf tournament, and for the most part, you're playing against a lot of the guys week in, week out, and certainly -- yeah, on your day you have to trust that you can compete and beat anyone and have that self-belief, which I think everyone in the field this week will have that.
Yeah, you just go out there and try your best and see where you end up.
Q. How different did it play today as far as greens being receptive? It wasn't rolling out in the fairways, either, but were you able to be aggressive on the back nine?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I mean, probably the hard thing was trying to judge the spin with wedges. Yeah, there's no doubt that you could be a little bit more aggressive. I think if it hadn't rained last night and it had been beautiful sunshine all day, I'm sure the course would have played very differently.
I guess we used the rain to our advantage, and I think we're all quite happy that we managed to get through today with no delays, given how bad the forecast looked.
That's great for the tournament. Hopefully the rain stays away tomorrow and we can get it done. I'm sure it'll be an exciting finish.
