MEIJER LPGA CLASSIC

June 14, 2025

Madelene Sagstrom

Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

Blythefield Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Okay, here with Madelene after her third round at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Awesome looking day on the scorecard. Two eagles to note. Just talk about how it went for you.

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I started off a little scrappy. No. 1 is playing really difficult this week being a firm green, kind of getting that downhill lie.

So I scrapped myself a good par there and then I made a nice up and down. Hit a wayward tee shot on 2, so nice up and down there. Had a chance for birdie on 3. I was like, I'm kind of getting into the groove here.

Yesterday I smacked my driver down No. 4. Only had to hit 6 iron into there, and today hit a lovely 5-wood to probably two feet. So it wasn't too hard work.

And then I decided for some reason I hit a really lovely second shot into 6 and just went plop. So that's kind of when you get -- I was happy I kind of grinded out the beginning of not letting it get to me and find my rhythm, and then momentum just literally switched and my confidence was high again.

Q. How would you describe the conditions out there today compared to the last couple days?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I feel like it was quite similar to yesterday afternoon. I expected more wind yesterday but today it was probably more wind than I expected it to be. It's tricky. The rough is quick and the greens are firm. You need to be in the fairway to have the best chance, and you have to be a bit lucky sometimes.

I mean, you really kind of have to be at the right numbers. It is really hard to hit the soft shots this week.

It's lovely. I've been here every single year since I turned pro and seen a lot of different shapes of this golf course, but this is fun. This is a little different than we played before, so I'm enjoying it.

Q. What's the mentality going into today? It's crowded leaderboard today. A lot of 4- and 5-unders up at the top. What was your thought going into today?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I mean, you just got to go out there and try to play golf. At the end of the day I knew I was rolling the putter well. It was kind of keep it in the fairway and give myself some chances.

At the end of the day it's like to put yourself in contention, to play good golf, win golf tournaments, you have to hit good golf shots and good putts and you just have to play a good game.

It's not -- you just try not to put too much pressure on yourself. I maybe got a little bit overthinking of some shots in the middle of my round today. I'm just trying to play good golf. I mean, it sounds like it should be easier than that but it's not. Just play good golf and takes care of the rest.

Q. How would you describe the atmosphere out here? I saw you signed a lot of autographs, talked to a lot of folks after the round. How would you describe the environment?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: Oh, this is -- I mean, this has always been one of my favorite tournaments, if not my favorite tournament on Tour that we come back to year after year. First of all, golf course is wonderful. I love the golf course.

But the community here is just wonderful. I think if you look at how an LPGA tournament should be run, this is a really good example. The fans are fantastic. I know it's a very good activity as a family to come out here. You see so many kids. They do such a good job here and the community is fantastic.

I always love come to go Grand Rapids and you'll see plenty more of me here.

Q. There is 11 players within three shots of the lead. It is going to be a barn burner tomorrow. Do you feel like you have to start off quick tomorrow or just going to take your chances as they come up?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I don't think so. I think you have to stay patient. There is a lot of good opportunities on the golf course. So keeping numbers off the scorecard, you can probably make a bogey here and there, but the par-5s, if you can take advantage of those out here it's a huge advantage for your score.

I mean, you have 18 as a great example. If you hit a good drive there you can have an eagle opportunity coming into the end tomorrow. I think it's more about staying patient and not really get ahead of yourself. Like you said it's a crowded leaderboard. It's up to -- anyone can win this.

Q. Following up on talking about the community and the course and the fans, when you are playing out here, whether you you make a birdie or bogey our eagle and you see the amount of fans here supporting you guys, does that just help energize you guys? When you have a bad shot, it makes you just eliminate that hole that much quicker because the fan support out here?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I think the girls that have the perspective of what it is that we actually do for a living, because like I keep talking about this, the older I get the more perspective I get and realize how fortunate I am. I mean, I hit a little white ball around for a living. I mean, like it's extremely fortunate lifestyle. At the end of the day I'm an entertainer, so if I don't entertain my crowd, I'm not going to have a job.

If you have the right mindset and perspective, I mean, they're the reason we have a job. They're the reason people enjoy coming to see us play. So I think it definitely helps. It helps me a lot. I see those little kids and I was them. I mean, I was that person wanting to have an autograph, standing there waiting for Lexi Thompson to come and just see her.

I mean, they're seeing their superheros. It's wonderful to be able to give back to that part of the reason why I'm sitting here. But I think if you have -- if you have the right mindset of golf, having the crowds, having the fans, it will uplift you and make you play better golf.

Q. Tied for the lead going into tomorrow. Mindset going into tomorrow? Going to let just the course come to you or are you going to attack the course?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: Well, I always try to attack the course. I think I do play quite aggressive. I think this course, I mean, it demands shots. Like I said the rough is thick in some places and the greens are firm, so it's a huge advantage being in the fairway.

So I think that -- I mean, I'm just going go out and try to play my game. I know my game is good enough to win at the moment. I've already won this year so far and also missed some cuts. I think just staying in the present, enjoying it. I mean, I put myself in a great position. I can't complain.

If it's my day tomorrow, we'll see. I'm going go out and give it a good run.
