Quick Quotes
Q. Paula, I guess you've earned your place in the quarterfinals the hard way. Talk us through that match this afternoon. It was a pretty tight game.
PAULA MARTIN SAMPEDRO: Yeah, it was definitely tough out there. Weather conditions got a little crazy, too, with wind, and we even got some rain. I just knew I had to stay patient throughout the way, and I was down almost all the way through and was all square going into the last hole and managed to birdie. Really happy to get that win.
Q. It was a lovely little birdie, kind of a classic little links shot.
PAULA MARTIN SAMPEDRO: Yeah, 100 percent. I putted, I was like on the fringe like 30 paces away. Yeah, that was a good one.
Q. Are these the shots you've been practising building up to this week?
PAULA MARTIN SAMPEDRO: Yeah, kind of. I always say there's some shots you only hit like a week a year, and it's this week, the week of the British. Those punch shots, your super long putts. It's definitely tough to practise those if you're not in here, but definitely got a lot of reps the past couple days.
Q. Am I right, you're the highest ranked European in the field, aren't you?
PAULA MARTIN SAMPEDRO: I might be. I don't know.
Q. Did you find any added pressure? Or obviously not then.
PAULA MARTIN SAMPEDRO: No, I wouldn't say so. Definitely there's a lot of good players in this field. Going into match play, anything can happen, so I don't really -- I don't really think about the ranking.
Q. It goes out the window, doesn't it, in match play.
PAULA MARTIN SAMPEDRO: Yeah, 100 percent, anything can happen.
Q. You're going to be up against your fellow Spaniard, another Paula. Obviously a match to be relished. Have you played against each other before?
PAULA MARTIN SAMPEDRO: I don't think we have, no. We've played with each other, like on the same team, so it's definitely going to be weird. But super happy that we both made the quarterfinals, and yeah, we'll try to play our best, and whoever wins will be in the semifinals, so I'll be happy either way.
Q. You'll be pretty familiar with her game; is that a help or a hindrance?
PAULA MARTIN SAMPEDRO: Yeah, I know her pretty well both on and off the golf course, so I think that definitely helps. But I will just try to focus on my own game and just try my best out there to get the win.
Q. Spanish golfers have enjoyed a nice purple patch a few years ago in this event. I think there were five in about seven years. I think Azahara Muñoz was the last one. Is there any inspiration for you young girls coming through?
PAULA MARTIN SAMPEDRO: Yeah, definitely. I know Carlota pretty well and I think she's won this tournament, as well. They're definitely a big inspiration for all of us coming from behind. Just happy just to be here and try to at least be as good as they were.
