Press Conference
P. BADOSA/N. Osaka
6-7, 6-1, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Very hard but tough-fought loss out there. What are some of the takeaways from today's match?
NAOMI OSAKA: I don't really have any right now.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in English.
Q. What was the problem with your hand at some point when you got it taped? Did that bother you during the game?
NAOMI OSAKA: Well, since Rome, I have had, like, blisters on my hands. I think it's like from the friction of clay, because I don't have blisters on any other surface.
Yeah, but I was kind of used to it, because I also had to ask for the physio in Rome.
Q. What do you think made the difference in the end today? It was pretty close.
NAOMI OSAKA: I think she was probably more aggressive or something. I feel like that's a mistake that I have made the past two matches. It's something that I'm trying to fix. But also, yeah, I mean, it was a tough match, so...
Q. I know all losses stink, but are they harder now than they used to be?
NAOMI OSAKA: Yeah.
Q. Why is that, I guess, just to follow up?
NAOMI OSAKA: I mean, I think as time goes on, I feel like I should be doing better. But also, I kind of talked about this before, maybe a couple years ago, or maybe recently, I'm not sure.
I hate disappointing people. So, like, even with Patrick, I was thinking this just now, but he goes from working with, like, the greatest player ever to, like, What the fuck this is? You know what I mean? Sorry for cursing, I hope I don't get fined, but...
THE MODERATOR: You want to take a minute?
(Naomi leaves press conference.)
THE MODERATOR: Okay. We'll do one more English question before we switch to Japanese. One more, please.
Q. Obviously this is a really tough loss. How will this make you stronger?
NAOMI OSAKA: I hope you can tell me that. I think, I'm not sure. I feel like I learn little things from each match. I think I lost the tiebreaker in Rome, and I didn't lose the tiebreaker here. So, I mean, I am conscious of things when I'm playing, so maybe the next match I play I'll learn little things from today.
THE MODERATOR: Two questions in Japanese, please.
(Naomi's answers to questions in Japanese.)
NAOMI OSAKA: Yeah, I don't necessarily know my grass season schedule right now. I wasn't really expecting to lose in the first round, so it's something that I'm going to have to work out.
But I think I am excited for when I do play my first match.
