Press Conference
H. BAPTISTE/B. Haddad Maia
4-6, 6-3, 6-1
THE MODERATOR: Obviously a tough one today against a very good opponent. Can you give us your overall thoughts and takeaways from the match today?
BEATRIZ HADDAD MAIA: Well, I think I had a good first set. I started I think the first three games Love-30, and and I had break points for her that I was playing very well. I served very well also for the set. I think I did a good job.
But the second one, I had my break up, and I wasn't aggressive as I wanted. That's tennis. She was going for the shots. She was improving her game also and feeling better on the court.
I was trying to be competitive. I know I could do better things that I know and I work every day. But, yeah, she deserve it. She played better in the half to the end of the match.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Can I ask you about your opponent. Did she surprise you in any way? Were there things that she did that you didn't expect?
BEATRIZ HADDAD MAIA: No, she has a lot of good skills. I know her from a few years. We played in Paris in a 125K, I think 2022. I know her also from small tournaments in U.S. I know her from a few years.
She has quality. She can play with speed. She has good slice. She can lob, do dropshots. She has all the skills. Yeah, she's doing well. She's confident. Now she's doing a good year.
I know she could be dangerous, but that's tennis. When you step on court, it's 50/50. You need to go and show up. Today she did better than me.
Q. It seemed from watching the match that you were playing perfectly well. She was just hitting her spots.
BEATRIZ HADDAD MAIA: Yeah, I think she put her level up. In the second set, I don't think I played that bad. I think she improved. The important points in the first set was going to my side. In the second, was going to her side.
Yeah, unfortunately I was break down in the beginning of the third set. Yeah, is completely different when you play these kind of players. When you are 2-1 and 3-Love, it change a lot, 4-1 and 3-2.
Yeah, it's tennis. Yeah, she deserve it. She is young. She has a good future.
Q. Did you have the sense in the third set when you were fighting to get the break that you were one point away and that could change the feel of the match?
BEATRIZ HADDAD MAIA: Yeah, I always think the things are going to change. I'm always positive. Even 5-1 down, doesn't matter which match I play, I always think that I can find a way to win the match.
I know also, yeah, I watch her in the last matches, I know that she sometimes fell also. Everyone feel it when we have the pressure. It's completely normal. I have these thoughts also. I served at 1-Love in the second set. I felt the same.
It's tennis. Yeah, I wish her good luck in the next round.
