M. FRECH/O. Jabeur
7-6, 6-0
THE MODERATOR: Ons, tough loss. Could you summarize a bit about your performance out there today?
ONS JABEUR: Yeah, I mean, nothing much to expect from this match. I haven't had a lot of matches. But, yeah, I tried my best. Unfortunately that's what you get when you're not get in the key moments and win the points.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in English.
Q. What would you like to focus on in your performance?
ONS JABEUR: Mostly my health and everything around it. It's very tough to get injured and come back. I feel this time was a bit more difficult than the other times.
I will keep trying and keep doing what I'm doing. I've been working so hard lately. It's tough when you don't get the results. But that's tennis. That's part of it. I hope this difficult period will pass.
Q. Last year you have been very vocal about the scheduling of the games, especially when it comes to night matches and women in night matches. I don't know if you heard what the president of the French Tennis Federation said on Monday. He said, We have to do what's best for the fans, or what the fans will be most interested in. It's still early in the tournament, but so far it's only been men's matches on the night sessions. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on that.
ONS JABEUR: I mean, same thoughts what I said last year. It's still sad that we are still seeing this. I keep standing by my words.
In Europe, in general, it's unfortunate for women's sports in general. Not for tennis but for in general. I hope whoever is making the decision, I don't think they have daughters, because I don't think they want to treat their daughters like this.
You know, it's a bit ironic. They don't show women's sport, they don't show women's tennis, and then they ask the question, Yeah, but mostly they watch men. Of course they watch men more because you show men more. Everything goes together.
It's a shame from the Federation, a shame from the Prime, whatever called the TV, that they made such a contract like this. A lot of great players, they deserve to be there. One of the matches was Naomi and Paula. Such an unbelievable match. They were supposed to be there. Like last year, Iga and Naomi was supposed to be there. A lot of great matches, they should have been there.
I'm not sure what kind of fans he's talking about. I know I'm a fan. I will watch that match.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in French.
Q. I can see it's not easy. It's probably difficult to describe what you're experiencing right now.
ONS JABEUR: It's very difficult indeed. When you're in the quarterfinals twice here, you want to be in the semifinals or the final. You don't want to experience a loss in the first round. But this is part of tennis.
I was not expecting much from this tournament because I was not ready when it comes to tennis, when it comes to my physical shape. I'm feeling better than a week and a half ago, but it takes some effort. I can't do this just overnight.
Mentally I'm experiencing a tough time, but this is part of the game. I don't want to be part of these people who are more affected by the results than they should.
I will just keep working even harder. I will try to find new solutions. I've tried new solutions, but it didn't work. But this is tennis.
In the end, either you win or either you lose and there can be just one winner.
Q. What doesn't click at the moment?
ONS JABEUR: It's a number of things. The fact that I haven't played a lot of matches on clay, it doesn't help. Although I spent a whole week training with a lot of different players, I was hitting the ball well, I need some rest. I'm really tired because I've been training really hard and not getting the results in.
I need some perspective and to analyze what is going on.
Q. Could Wimbledon and the grass season help you to find the solutions and the results that you need?
ONS JABEUR: I hope so. No matter the surface, I'm going to keep working even harder to see what happens. I love grass, of course. This is a different step for me. I hope I will enjoy myself playing on grass as much as I did over the past few years.
