M. ANDREEVA/Y. Putintseva
6-3, 6-1
THE MODERATOR: Mirra, you're into the round of 16 again here. At this halfway point of the tournament, how are you feeling on court?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, I'm super happy with my performance today. I felt like this match was very tricky and hard.
So, yeah, I'm happy with my level and super happy to be back to the fourth round.
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. A word about the feeling on court when you know everything seems under control and going well.
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, today I can say that I felt a little nervous before the match, but overall, throughout the whole match, I felt like I could do whatever I want on the court.
Like, you know, I felt free. I felt like even though the match is tight and even though sometimes she plays very tough shots, I felt like as soon as I recover and the point starts again, I felt like I can create what I want. It felt nice, honestly (smiling).
Yeah, I'm happy that with every match I play, I feel better and better. I think that this is a good thing.
Q. You said you felt a little nervous at the beginning. The last two matches you have had a slow start. Does that worry you at all? Do you feel you need to start a little bit quicker?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Well, maybe it worried me a little bit, but I'm just happy that it doesn't matter if the start is slow. I can bounce back and still, you know, the first two matches it was 0-3, and then the second match was 1-3, but I came back, and the first match I won the first set 6-4 and the second match I won 6-3.
Of course, it would be nice to maybe start a little bit better, but I think that it doesn't really bother me. Maybe I just need a little bit more time for these first matches to kind of start and play my tennis.
But overall, I don't know, it's okay. I'm not really worried.
Q. What do you think is the main aspect that Conchita is handling especially well on your game and on your character, on the daily work?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: I think that she knows what to tell me and how to calm me down or either how to pump me up, so it depends how I feel. I think that she knows what to do to make me feel better.
I think that this is really important in my case, because for me, of course, it is important how I feel. So if I feel a little bit down or nervous, she knows how to kind of, you know, make a joke so I can laugh and a little bit relaxed, or if I feel like super energetic, she also knows how to calm me down.
I think that day by day she still also knows what to do more, so I think that in this case she's doing a very good job.
Q. What are your thoughts going into the next match? Have you had much contact with Dasha Kasatkina?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, I practiced with her here once already, so I think that we practice together every tournament. It's going to be an entertaining match, for sure, because I think we both know each other very well. So, you know, I think that it's going to be fun and also maybe pretty tight.
We're going to see, but I think that the match is going to be super interesting.
Q. Your backhand down the line is your shot, and in my opinion, you hit it better than almost anyone on the tour. How long has that been part of your weaponry? Did you have it when you were younger, and how did it develop?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, I can say that I felt super confident playing my backhand down the line since I was very young. So I think that with years and practices, I just kind of learned how to get better in this shot.
Yeah, I'm trying to still improve it every day, because I feel like sometimes it's not ideal. But I can, you know, of course create a lot of offensive shots with my backhand, especially down the line. So since I'm very young, I felt like this is kind of maybe my signature shot.
Q. A year ago here you talked about the idea of going into a match with a game plan from your coach, but then just kind of winging it. Has that changed at all to now?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: I can say that maybe I try to remember a little bit more from what Conchita tells me (smiling). So I have, you know, of course a game plan and kind of a goal how to play for the match, but I can say that when I start to play, I don't have, like, a pattern in my head that I say, Okay, I go to cross one line because she has worst backhand, or I don't know, whatever.
So when I'm on the court and I start to play the match, I feel like I just do whatever I want, and, you know, then we see if my game needs a little adjustment.
Q. How would you describe Daria as an interviewer?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: I think she can improve (laughter). No, honestly, of course, I think that it's very important that she finds a great timing to ask people questions, because when I took the camera from her in Rome and I started to ask some people, some of them were eating, some of them were on the phone, so I felt a little embarrassed.
I think that she, of course, is doing a great job finding the right timing when to ask questions, and I think her and Natasha, they have a great kind of list of questions. They know what to ask, so it's entertaining and interesting. So, of course, I think she's okay (laughter).
