Frontstretch Quotes
An Interview with:
Q. Denny, your team told you had a quarter to half a lap to the good, but you raced it out with Byron. Any point during that battle you were nervous you would run out of fuel?
DENNY HAMLIN: No, not really. I wanted to get the lead. Obviously he was doing a great job defending.
Daddy, I'm sorry, but I beat your favorite driver, folks.
Q. I got to ask, who is that?
DENNY HAMLIN: All of 'em (smiling).
Q. Let's reflect on the past couple of weeks. You look back at Charlotte. Arguably lost the race because you didn't have enough fuel. You've been on baby watch. 23XI. How satisfying is it to come and win after the last few weeks?
DENNY HAMLIN: It's fantastic. Chris Gayle, this whole team, has done a great job. We've been so fast throughout the entire year. Just haven't finished it for one reason or another.
Feels good to come here to Michigan where we've been so close over the years. To get a victory for Toyota, Yahoo, Sport Clips, Shady Rays, the Jordan brand, everyone.
This is such a gratifying day to restart 11th or 12th, something like that, and drive to the front.
Q. How much discipline did it take during the beginning of the run to make sure you saved fuel?
DENNY HAMLIN: I was going all out pretty much the entire time. Once I got to the lead, that's when I started saving. He kept telling me I was good. I knew I was going to have to go 100% to get around everybody. Just worked them one by one.
