Quick Quotes
Q. Matt, low round of the week so far. What was working for you today?
MATT McCARTY: Hit it nice. Drove it really nice, which I did the last three days, but hit the irons a little bit better. My pace has been good on putts. So just kind of gave myself a lot of chances today and kind of felt like somewhat of a stress-free three rounds of golf for me. So it was nice to get a few more birdies today for sure.
Q. You mentioned driving has been nice for you this week. How important has that been to maintaining a mid-60s score on a golf course that has changed a lot from being pretty wet to now firming up and getting a bit dryer?
MATT McCARTY: I think the rough's just gnarly regardless. I'm not one of the longest guys out here, but being able to hit driver and fit it into some of these tighter spots and give myself a little bit more wedges and shorter opportunities, I think has been beneficial.
Yeah, it's a lot easier to hit it out of the fairway than the rough, that's for sure.
Q. You were a winner out here before, but a National Open is definitely a different beast, and you have a chance of taking this thing tomorrow. What's the next 12 hours look like for you?
MATT McCARTY: Kind of same old thing. Girlfriend's here this week, which is nice. So kind of turn off from golf at night and hang out with her.
It's just the crowd out here is awesome, the atmosphere. They get up for this event, so it's cool. Obviously National Open, and to be in the U.S. Open next week is special, but something to build off the last three days after kind of a not great month of golf for me.
Just keep on doing what I'm doing and take advantage of the opportunity tomorrow will be great.
Q. Speaking of the atmosphere, birdie at the Rink, what was that like?
MATT McCARTY: That was fun. I don't think I hit it within 50 feet yet, so it was nice to actually get one today.
That hole, it's pretty sweet. It's really fun to see all the people banging on the boards and everything.
Q. Have you played other events in Canada before or been to Canada?
MATT McCARTY: No, I haven't played golf up here. Lived in Seattle when I was little, so we went up to Vancouver a lot, but first time in Toronto in the area. It's been cool, a lot of fun.
Q. Are you a hockey fan? Did it particularly resonate with you the whole Rink Hole experience?
MATT McCARTY: Yeah, obviously with the playoffs or Stanley Cup going on this week, it's cool to be up here and watch the games and everything. I think everybody here is a Leafs fan, but it's kind of cool to see them root for the Oilers. Kind of just like this, there's a lot of Patriotism up here or Canadaism or whatever it is. It's been cool to see.
Q. Enter the week with a week off and two prior missed cuts. What was kind of the mindset? You mentioned having more fun this week.
MATT McCARTY: I was playing well kind of coming into this, I felt like I was playing better than two missed cuts honestly. I think it's tough out here to put a little too much emphasis on how you're playing, and I think trying a little bit too hard.
There's some freedom that comes with just trying to have fun and play good golf. So play the game more than golf swing or score or whatever, and I think I've done a better job of that this week. Obviously hitting better shots helps with that too, and I feel like that's been a little bit of a thing.
It was nice to rest up last week, kind of work on a few things, and get some energy coming up into the summer.
