Quick Quotes
Q. Another solid round today. Can you talk about the conditions out there compared to yesterday?
RYAN FOX: I think for us it felt pretty similar, to be honest. Probably a little warmer yesterday afternoon. It was two really nice days out there for golf to be honest. The golf course handled the rain really well, and obviously we got the nice side of the draw, missing out on the rain yesterday morning. Very happy with the two days so far.
Q. Can you talk about your game plan heading into the weekend?
RYAN FOX: It's obviously a golf course you can make a lot of birdies on. It's going to require two more good scores on the weekend, so I've played it pretty aggressively so far for the first two days. Sort of no change there.
Hit driver off the majority of tees and try to give yourself some short shots in. If you hit your wedges good, you can definitely make some birdies, and I've done that the first couple days pretty well.
Q. When you arrived here, did you feel like this was a course that would suit you?
RYAN FOX: Yeah, it did look that way. It's obviously got some length to it, quite a few par-4s. If you drive it good round here, you do get a lot of chances too. It feels like either/or. Either you're hitting a lot of club in, or if you hit a good drive, you hit a wedge in.
I've driven it pretty good the last couple days and given myself plenty of chances. Yesterday was kind of one of those rounds that it could have been really good. Today was a little bit all over the place. I missed a couple of short putts and made a couple of really good ones. 4-under was probably a par score today. 4-under I felt like I left a few out there yesterday.
Q. You said you made a few birdies, 13. I just counted them, and that's a lot. Do you like a golf course where the score is like 12-, 15-under after two rounds, or do you have a preference like a U.S. Open type course where it's challenging and 3-under might be a good score?
RYAN FOX: I generally like hard golf courses, but I will say, after playing Memorial last week, it was kind of nice to come here and see you've got a little bit of space. You still get penalized for bad shots, but if you're a yard in the rough, you still feel like you've got a chance this week.
I think the rain definitely impacted the scoring a lot. I thought, when we played Tuesday and Wednesday in the Pro-Am, it was starting to get firmer fast, and you had to think about it a little bit more. If you were in the rough, it was hard to get the ball close. It was hard to hit a few of the fairways with how firm the fairways are. Obviously with the rain softening it up, it became a little bit of target golf.
Hopefully it does firm up over the weekend and play a little bit tougher. I think I definitely prefer that than a birdie fest, but I've made a few the first couple of rounds at least.
Q. I'll ask you this again. Getting that first win over here a month or so ago, how does that free you up? Do you think this has led to some good performances since then?
RYAN FOX: Definitely. Just everything doesn't seem to quite matter as much. It's hard to kind of put your finger on what exactly. Obviously I know I've been playing well. To win, you've got to play well. But it just feels like that 4-footer for birdie doesn't matter as much if I make it or miss it. If I hit a bad shot, it's kind of deal with it and see what comes.
I wasn't very good at that probably the start of the year. I sort of rode the good and the bad a bit too much. I think in this game you've got to be a bit more level-headed than that. I think the win just let me do that. Go out and play and try to hit a good shot, and if I don't, it doesn't really matter. Trust that every other part of the game is working all right too, and the last few weeks have shown that.
Q. You won some big events in Europe. I'm curious, what sort of feedback did you have from people back in New Zealand after winning in the U.S. compared to winning in Europe?
RYAN FOX: I probably got a lot more messages after Myrtle Beach than I have done in any of the wins in Europe. Obviously winning at Wentworth was massive, and I got a lot of messages after that.
The PGA TOUR just feels a little bit special in that regard. I think for the general public at home, they probably don't know what an alternate event is or anything like that. It's just, hey, Foxy won on the PGA TOUR. That's pretty cool.
It took me four days to clear my messages at home. I've got a lot of support, which is awesome.
