Gordon Sargent

Caledon, Ontario, Canada

TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley (North Course)

Quick Quotes

Q. First day on the PGA TOUR as a professional. How does it feel to be a PGA TOUR member? How did it go your opening round?

GORDON SARGENT: First real job, so a little interesting. Some nerves and excitement. Nice to tee off early, to not have to sit around all day and wait.

Yeah, I was definitely nervous, but happy with how I kind of hung in there. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Q. How did it feel on the 1st tee? Did you allow yourself a moment at all to put it into context?

GORDON SARGENT: I was trying to focus on the 1st tee shot, but yeah, just be happy. We're here on the PGA TOUR in Canada. Just kind of take it one step at a time. Yeah, just excited to be playing here. Hopefully just keep playing well.

Q. What's it mean to have -- your parents are here. Your girlfriend's here. What's it like to have your support system walking with you the whole way?

GORDON SARGENT: It's cool. It's nice to know they don't really care what I shoot out there, which is nice. It's nice that they support, come out and walk, especially when it's going to rain and really wet out. It's nice to have them there. A bunch of people want to see me play well. So it's pretty awesome.

Q. Was the pre-round routine standard to what you normally do?

GORDON SARGENT: Definitely a little different as far as college golf. I feel like over the last month I've been trying to work on that. Going into the trailer at a certain time and like eating -- just trying to get that routine, not have too much time but also not feel rushed.

Definitely still kind of getting used to exactly what I want. Feel like it flowed pretty well today.

Q. What time did you wake up, and what time did you get to the course?

GORDON SARGENT: The people -- our neighbors were having like a disco party at -- I was up since like 3:00. I had my alarm set for 5:00. So I'll probably go take a nap this afternoon.

Q. You got to the course what time?

GORDON SARGENT: I got to the course at 6:00, for an 8:30 tee time.

Q. The birdie on 18. Nice to finish with a birdie. Can you talk through the last hole and how you played 18?

GORDON SARGENT: It's actually funny. I haven't even seen the back nine this week. Played U.S. Open qualifier on Monday, played nine on Tuesday, and honestly didn't have enough energy to walk the back. I was kind of relying on my caddie Travis.

It's nice. If you don't know what you're doing out there, it's definitely tough, but nice to lean on him. Put a good position on the second shot and finish off with a birdie is always nice.

Q. Is that something sometimes as a player you can almost over prepare in the sense of like you've never seen the course, but you still played -- the back nine, but you still played effectively?

GORDON SARGENT: I've never been a fan of practice rounds. They're definitely important to figure out where you hit it. I feel like I just slap it around and try to find what's wrong with your game.

I kind of looked at it as maybe we'll just go out there and hit it where we're trying to. You never know what happens from there.

Q. Is there anything you found? Monday you didn't have the greatest score at the U.S. Open qualifier. Turned it around pretty quickly to have a solid score today.

GORDON SARGENT: My coach Scott Hamilton was here on Tuesday. Trying to focus a little bit more. I'm a perfectionist. Obviously want to be perfect right away. Kind of focusing on progress. Control what we can control and stack some good shots.

Q. What, if anything, are you going to tweak into tomorrow?

GORDON SARGENT: Probably go hit a few balls, get a good swing feel. Yeah, we're going to a Blue Jays game this afternoon. Go forget about golf and be ready for tomorrow.

Q. You played with Johnny Keefer, who you're familiar with, good friends with. How special was it to have your first round as a pro be with Johnny?

GORDON SARGENT: Yeah, it's cool. Keefer and I have known each other for a while. He's always super happy. You can tell he wants people he knows to play well too. It's always nice to play with a buddy, kind of laugh it up going down the fairways and just talk about stupid stuff we've done.
