Quick Quotes
Q. Cam Champ, 8-under 62 today. Just what are your thoughts on the round fresh off the golf course?
CAMERON CHAMP: It was very solid. I stayed within myself. I kind of stuck to my -- our game plan as far as how we're going to try to attack this place. I was just very committed out there today.
I have no expectations this week, the rest of the year. I'm just trying to play my game and stay within myself. I know, if I can do that, most of the time it ends up decently well. It's easier for me -- whenever I kind of get in my head or start over thinking or doing things, it kind of gets a little sideways. So today I was very proud of myself for that.
Q. A lot of guys in the earlier waves complained about just -- not complained, but mentioned that they struggled with the softness of the fairways. You struck the ball really well today. How did you manage that? Were things firming up as your round went on, or was that something you had to contend with?
CAMERON CHAMP: Not really. 18 was the only one that was decently firm for where my ball ended up. It had to have rolled 20, 30 yards. The rest of the course was pretty darn soft.
Earlier in the week you could kind of skip shots back there. I was trying. I hit a good wedge on 15, I think it was. It skipped, but it's not skipping like it was because there's so much moisture.
I'm sure, if we don't get rain in the next couple of days, it's going to change dramatically, kind of how it was Tuesday, which it was rock hard and skipping four or five paces with a lob wedge. It will definitely be a test.
Q. You mentioned things aren't skipping on the fairways. The rough obviously has taken in a lot of that water. How much of a premium does it put on driving accuracy?
CAMERON CHAMP: It's huge this week. If you're in that rough, it depends on the lie. If it's a decent lie, then you're guessing. If it's a flyer, guessing if the club's going to grab or it's not going to grab. In some cases you're just hacking out, like my shot on 1. Barely flared it right in the rough, but it was one of those I had to hack it out with a pitching wedge.
Definitely fairways this week is key to give you chances to score.
Q. You had a shot in on the fairway on 18. You were right of the green there. What did you see on that third shot that you were able to stick so close?
CAMERON CHAMP: There, just trying to make good contact. I wasn't trying to hit a spinner, just trying to hit a little release shot. Like I said, the greens are soft, so you were able to kind of do that versus if it was yesterday or Tuesday, I would have tried probably to hit a little spinner shot there to hold the green.
For me there, it was just all about contact and just leaving myself a good look.
