Plainfield Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Is that one of the -- you guys were up against a guy playing by himself out here, let alone a match by himself. That's a little different for this format.

HUNTER POWELL: Yeah. I mean, for him to win his first match, which has never been done by just one golfer in a four-ball match and then for him to come out, repeat it, and not only repeat it but to play better is one of the most absurd things I've ever seen, and we told him when we shook hands on 18 that he was the best golfer that we've ever seen in person.

CARSON LOONEY: I don't know if I'll ever play a match with everyone greater at golf than him.

HUNTER POWELL: For him to just be as resilient as he was, knowing that he couldn't make a mistake or he just lost a hole, I think we played pretty well. I think he lit the course on fire for 36 holes.

But yeah, this is our first U.S. four-ball event, and we've seen some different things over the last week, weather included, and that was -- it was actually fun to watch. We're walking up 18 like he'll probably hoop it for eagle and we would go home with a smile on our face because that's just the kind of day it was. But an incredible golfer, an incredible day. We're just happy to be here.

Q. He obviously got a break on 18, he didn't play his bunker shot very well. Who knocked it on the green?

HUNTER POWELL: I did, and I can understand you -- I had two and a half feet for birdie and he short-sided -- he had to hit the hero shot.

CARSON LOONEY: Which he's been doing all day. We expected him to do it. But I've had some troubles with the driver this week, kind of spraying it all over the place, and knocking it on the green on 18 is big for us and kind of took a lot of pressure off us.

Q. There's an age difference here; how do you guys know each other so well?

CARSON LOONEY: So he's actually my caddie at our home club.

HUNTER POWELL: At Congressional. Actually I've known his dad and his uncle, his family for a while, and we met three years ago at a Maryland state qualifier.

Q. So you're the caddie at Congressional?

HUNTER POWELL: Yeah, he beat me by one that day, and I said to myself, I never want to play against this kid anymore, I want to play with him, and we've played a bunch of four-ball stuff, but we didn't have this on the bingo card.

Q. Making it to the semifinals?

HUNTER POWELL: Absolutely. We said when we got here, we've got four days of golf, let's just have some fun and see what happens, and we're going to the semis, so it's pretty cool.

Q. Two-year exemption, too, for the semis.

CARSON LOONEY: Yeah, it's great.

Q. You're going to be a freshman in college this year?

CARSON LOONEY: Yeah.

Q. What's the biggest things you guys have done in golf?

CARSON LOONEY: I've played in the U.S. Junior Amateur. I went to the round of 16 in that.

Q. What year?

CARSON LOONEY: That was two years ago, so '22. But I think this is probably Hunter's biggest --

Q. '23 down in Daniel island?

HUNTER POWELL: Yeah, our home qualifier was our first USGA qualifier I've played in and this is the first USGA event I've played in, and now we're on to the semifinals. So this is absolutely my biggest accomplishment, and it's just fun because I get to experience it with Carson and his dad is actually my caddie.

Q. What's your dad's name?

CARSON LOONEY: Joe.

Q. Do you have a regular job or just caddie?

HUNTER POWELL: I caddie part-time and I do have a regular job that keeps me away from golf somewhat.

Q. What do you do?

HUNTER POWELL: Just construction. But I get to go out on the golf course and caddie for Carson and Joe a ton, and then we try to play where we can, when we can. But we've kind of strung something together this week and we're just going to keep it going.
