Quick Quotes
Q. So talk about this quarterfinal match. Would you say it's a more comfortable win than maybe your round of 16 this morning? 3&2.
ATHENA SINGH: It wasn't that comfortable. I mean, the wind picked up, and for me, I was having a lot longer shots on the front nine, but I was able to save some good pars oops and Keira was helping me along. So it was a good experience.
Q. Yeah.
KEIRA YUN: For me, I felt like there was more at stake for the quarterfinals versus the Sweet 16, so I felt like this was harder.
Q. So you were thinking a little bit more about what it meant to win and make it to the semis?
KEIRA YUN: Yeah, and it was the second 18, so harder.
Q. You mentioned the wind. I think obviously was a little windier today but also I think it was coming from a different direction. How did you guys manage that?
ATHENA SINGH: We just tried to gauge it as well as we could and chose the right clubs and talk through it. There were a few holes where I was just trying to go for the center of the greens because I had like a hybrid in.
For the wind, I guess it's just like you play and then you start to figure things out. You just got to play really conservative.
Q. Yeah. I think there was -- you guys made a birdie on 12 in the second match to go 2-up I think for the first time in the match.
ATHENA SINGH: 12?
KEIRA YUN: That was your birdie. Yeah, your birdie.
ATHENA SINGH: Oh, yeah.
Q. Can you walk me through that?
ATHENA SINGH: So on that hole I've been trying to layup. Every time I get really close to the hazard or hit a tree. I'm hitting an iron so that's kind of sad.
But I decided that this time I'm going to go for the greens. I went for it. It went a little to the right, hit a tree, and it was close to the hazard, but it was fine.
Then I hit a really good shot from there and made maybe like a 12, 15 foot putt. That was a good momentum change because that was a longer putt than I had made, so it was good confidence.
Q. You guys felt like you put the pressure on them at that point?
ATHENA SINGH: Yeah.
KEIRA YUN: Yeah, I think once we went 2-up I think, yeah, I could --
ATHENA SINGH: I think we were all a little stressed at that point.
Q. Yeah. Were there any other highlights or highlight moments from the quarterfinal match, major shots?
ATHENA SINGH: I made an eagle on No. 5 I think.
KEIRA YUN: Yeah, you did.
Q. Is that a par-5 or did you hole-out?
ATHENA SINGH: It's a par-5. I hit a shot from I don't even know how far it was, 270, 280. It got a really good kick and I had a ten-foot putt for eagle and I made it, so I was happy.
Q. Do you remember what it kicked off? Was it like a mound or...
ATHENA SINGH: Yeah, there is like a hill around 70 yards from the greens, and after that hill everything kicks left and straight down.
Q. Yeah. Going back to the round of 16, that one was closer score-wise. Could you talk about the closeness and maybe how the whole match went down?
KEIRA YUN: That one was really -- I think that one was really close score-wise and I felt like we just kept going back and forth and kept tying, so it was pretty stressful.
But I just kind of like trusted that it would work out because, I mean, we were able to like save each other if one of us went off.
ATHENA SINGH: Yeah, lots of pars were made in that match, and pretty much the holes that we won is when they made a mistake and we kept grinding for par.
Q. Yeah. Were you guys playing for par, kind of like was it intentional or were you saving pars?
KEIRA YUN: We were playing for par, and if one of us messed up the other one had an easy par.
ATHENA SINGH: I mean, there was like very few where we had to make like a hard putt for par, so...
Q. Were there any other significant major shots in that match, major moments?
ATHENA SINGH: Keira made a putt on number -- wait, what putt did you make?
KEIRA YUN: Sweet 16. I don't remember.
ATHENA SINGH: I feel like you made a long putt. I don't remember which hole.
KEIRA YUN: I don't remember either. That was so long ago.
ATHENA SINGH: So long.
Q. Do you remember if it was made for birdie or?
ATHENA SINGH: I think that was to tie to keep momentum for both of us. I think it was a long putt.
KEIRA YUN: Yeah.
Q. Okay. Lastly, you mentioned the significance of going into the semifinals. What are your thoughts going into the last day of a USGA Championship?
ATHENA SINGH: I'm just surprised we made it this fourth quarter.
KEIRA YUN: Yeah, we didn't think we would make it past the cut.
ATHENA SINGH: I came with low expectations.
KEIRA YUN: I'm just surprised and glad that we made it, so I am just hoping we can have fun tomorrow.
Q. Did you think you were going to make the cut?
KEIRA YUN: I don't want to sound cocky.
Q. So you did think so?
KEIRA YUN: I mean, yeah, if both of us played pretty well I was pretty confident we'd make the cut.
Q. You knew if you played your game you are going to make the cut?
KEIRA YUN: Yeah.
Q. The only other question then, headed into tomorrow. Played two long matches today. How do you guys rest, recover, unwind, and prepare?
ATHENA SINGH: I think I'm just going to go to the hotel room and sleep, take a shower and sleep. I have no other plans.
KEIRA YUN: Yeah, probably just going to go home and shower and go straight to bed.
Q. One other question. You mentioned obviously feeling stress on the course. What kind of exchanges do you guys have or what kind of conversations help you stay grounded or whatever you need to do to focus?
KEIRA YUN: For me, I had so much faith in her. If she missed the green I'm like oh, she'll get up and down. I don't know, I had too much trust in her. I guess that was part of it.
I guess we just talked about like, oh, if you do this I'll do that, stuff like that. We were just trying to keep it conservative and if we could go for it, then we would.
ATHENA SINGH: Yeah.
Q. Your conversations mostly always talking about the golf in between shots?
ATHENA SINGH: We were pretty like light talking. Sometimes we'll talk about random stuff, but just trying to keep the mood light and happy rather than anxious and stressed. I feel like that really helped us stay in the game.
KEIRA YUN: Or we pick on each about bad shots, too.
ATHENA SINGH: Yeah.
Q. What kind of stuff do you say? How friendly or how unfriendly?
ATHENA SINGH: Gosh. I think she almost shanked one into me on one hole.
KEIRA YUN: Shanked it out of the bunker.
ATHENA SINGH: I said, my bunker game doesn't suck that much.
Q. What hole was that?
KEIRA YUN: That was No. 15.
Q. In the first match or the second match?
KEIRA YUN: The first match. And then I ended up in there the second round and she was like, don't shank it into me, and I was like...
Q. And you said to her that your bunker game doesn't suck as bad.
ATHENA SINGH: Yeah.
