THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome the individual and team champions of LIV Golf Korea presented by Coupang Play. Bryson DeChambeau, captain of Crushers GC, alongside winning teammates Paul Casey and Anirban Lahiri. Well played, guys.
Bryson, our individual champion, let me just start with you. You began the day with a four-shot lead and mentioned yesterday you were going to go out there and play like a kid. Closed the day with a round of 6-under par 66 on Sunday. Can you talk us through your round, especially your back nine, and reflect on your week as a whole.
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: I want to say, first of all, I'm proud of these guys for getting the job done. It's been a little bit of time.
Chucky and I had a great battle out there. He never wavered today, it felt like, until 16. It felt like he was just pushing forward and he was going to shoot 10, 11-under today. I thought, my goodness, I don't know if I could beat that today.
I was personally pretty nervous on the front nine for whatever reason. That putt I made on 8 was great, two-putt on 9. After the 9th hole, I don't know what hit me, I just said, you know what, just play like a kid again, and I started doing that on the back nine and striped a 3-wood on 11, gave me a lot of confidence.
Hit a good shot in there on 11, just didn't make the putt. 12, great hole. 13, great hole. 14, didn't make birdie. That's okay. 15, played a great hole. 16, didn't make birdie, but I knew something was coming. I didn't know when it was going to happen.
Finally on 17, just the bubble burst, and I felt really good. Then the drive on 18, I hit a perfect drive on 18, and the wind just pumped it off left. Went in the hazard, and lucky it stayed up, but also kind of unlucky it wasn't in the middle of the fairway too.
It kind of evened itself out by the end of it and played some great golf. Proud of the team overall and proud of the way I stood fast in there.
Incredibly happy with the way G-Bo, my caddie, helped me through today.
Q. Bryson, you touched on Charles' round today. He put together a great score, 9-under par. That's arguably the round of the week, which kept the pressure on you all day. In that situation, you're obviously both going for the win. Can you just describe that balance of obviously wanting your teammate to play well but you're competing against him individually?
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: It's a weird dynamic. It's much like Formula One. You're rooting for him as much as you can. When they make birdie, you're like great birdie, that's awesome, and we were close to the lead for the team standing.
I was proud every time he made a birdie. I was happy for him. Then the competitor inside me said, all right, I've got to match it. There were times where it was tough to feel like I was up there with him. He just kept going. It was a good battle.
I don't know, man. It was fun. Charles, tough competitor, and we had a good time.
Q. Moving on to the team win, Ban, it might not have been your week individually, especially after that tough stretch around the turn yesterday, but seeing your team step up and ultimately take the lead from Smash on the back nine today, how much of a motivating factor is that for you to keep pushing forward when you're not necessarily in contention yourself?
ANIRBAN LAHIRI: No, I think our team model right from the get go has been, if I do my best and I put my best golf out there, it's going to help the team. I think that's what Paul and I did. We just had our head down. We were grinding it out and trying to make as many birdies as we could individually.
Yeah, I think from time to time we'd look up just to check on our teammates. Obviously the way Bryson and Charles have played, they kind of just by themselves, they beat the whole field. So it was our job to just kind of keep doing what we're doing.
We have a good team ethos, and we stick to that.
Q. Paul, you capped off the tournament with your strongest round of the week today, 5-under par 67. With both Crushers and Smash chasing their first wins of the season, you and Ban playing together, as he mentioned, Charles and Bryson obviously battling it out at the top. Can you just talk us through that dynamic with the team when you're both going for individual and the team wins?
PAUL CASEY: As Bryson said, you're focused on your own game. You're kind of keeping your eye on your teammate and then what the other guys are doing on the other side of the golf course.
We're all experienced on this team, and we're all -- we take our performances very, very seriously. So when I dug myself a hole at the beginning of the week shooting 4-over -- and to be honest, I struggled with, I think, just the travel from Mexico City to here -- it was a knuckle down kind of focus on what I had to do and play a great round of golf like I did today.
Our friendship is deep on and off the golf course, but when it's on the golf course, it's business for us. So very, very proud of what at least I contributed. I mean, we always contribute. It doesn't matter actually what our score is. We're always contributing. Proud we finally got our first win of the season.
THE MODERATOR: Thank you, Paul. Thank you, Ban. Bryson, if you could just hang while we answer some questions from the media.
Q. First question. I know that the prize pool for the team if you win is $3 million, right? I was wondering how it's divided amongst your team members.
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: At the end of the year, if we're in profit, we get a kickback at the end of the year. So we're incentivized from the team aspect to win quite heavily.
We're working on some thoughts around that moving forward, but we'll have more hopefully here soon. We're figuring that end of the bit out, but from what I feel and what we all feel, we are heavily incentivized.
Q. Right now this is probably a victory right before a major event that you'll have in PGA. Right now Scottie Scheffler is about to win THE CJ CUP. Considering that, a lot of fans are rooting for you right now, Bryson. Do you have any specific goals for the PGA TOUR or any goals for any major events?
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: My goal is to win every tournament that I show up to. Scottie is on a great run. Joaquin Niemann is on a great run. Jon Rahm has been playing well. There's a lot of star-studded talent out there right now that's going to be in the PGA Championship. We're going to be battling it out.
Glad to have pushed through in this victory and won this event, but there's a lot more work to be done this year. There's three more majors, and my eyes are focused on that with all the other LIV events, doing my absolute best in every single event I show up to.
Q. Congratulations on your victory. I think a lot of Korean youngsters are currently looking up to you. As a superstar for them right now, what could you give them as recommendations to do for their regimen, how to train, especially to become a long hitter like you?
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: I'd say the most important thing, when looking up to an athlete or a superstar, is make sure that when they're playing the game, they're enjoying it. That's first and foremost. If you're enjoying yourself, then you can go on to the next stage, which is how do I get better?
How do you get better? You practice and get yourself 1 percent better each and every day. Every day you're going out there saying, how can I get 1 percent better? That's the next step for a kid.
Then the last step, if they want to take their game further -- no pun intended -- well, pun intended -- if they want to hit it farther, they've got to do a speed training regimen, but make sure you're properly being taken care of with a trainer, a physio, someone who is helping keep your body in the right shape.
I'd say 15, 16 years old they can start speed training. Start out light, 30 to 50 balls with the driver as hard as you physically can three times a week, and then gradually escalate that to 75, 100 balls a week. Over the course of time, I would say three times a week you do it, and then two times a week the next week, for a month long session.
After that, you're going to gain 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 miles an hour easily. So that's the last piece.
Then how do you get yourself prepared like to play a golf event? You've got to go, after you speed train, and get your wedge game really dialed in after you've gained speed.
So that's kind of the program and the regimen that I would recommend to kids, but make sure they're having fun right off the bat. They've got to love it and enjoy this game.
Q. You got to meet the SA Minister of Sports, Arts and Recreation, Mr. Gayton McKenzie. How would it be to have a LIV Golf event happen on the African continent, particularly in South Africa?
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: I think that's what golf embodies is to grow this game globally. For us to go to Korea, Mexico last week, and then hopefully and ultimately South Africa next year would be an amazing thing for the game of golf down there in Cape Town and South Africa.
I personally always wanted to go. I've always heard great stuff from Louis, Charl, and numerous others. Any time we get to go to new places, this is my first time in Korea, and I absolutely love it. The people are fantastic. The food's great. Korean barbecue is great. You're going to have to give us some good recommendations.
Going down to the continent of Africa, and South Africa especially, is going to be a treat and an honor, and we can't wait to go there if we can get it done.
Q. I think today's success is actually a lot to you. The event is very popular amongst the Korean galleries. We have like record numbers right now, and I think it is really you at the center of that success.
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: Thank you.
Q. I just wanted to know like how did you first perceive Korea when you came here for the first time? And after those four days that you have been playing, has your impression of Korea or Korean fans changed a bit? Just want to know about what do you think about Korea and the fans.
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: Kevin Na and Danny Lee and numerous others have told me you've got to come to Korea. It's an amazing place. The people are amazing. The food's great. Korean barbecue is especially amazing. I was not disappointed at all.
Coming here, experiencing this for the first time, I've got to tell you, that galbi beef is amazing. I love it. I've had it pretty much every night, and I hope to have it again tonight in celebration.
So the people -- it was unbelievable this week, the response. Every single hole, there's people wanting to get high fives and whatnot. That just makes me feel comfortable and at home.
Hopefully I've inspired a few people here in Korea to play golf and get a little bit better and enjoy this great game of golf. I think that's the message of LIV Golf is growing this game globally, and I think we've done that pretty well.
I've got to say I'm looking forward to coming back. The people are great and love the food here too.
THE MODERATOR: Bryson, congratulations once again. Thank you very much.
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: Thank you, everybody.
