MUTUA MADRID OPEN

May 1, 2025

Iga Swiatek

Madrid, Spain

From Recorded Audio

C. GAUFF/I. Swiatek

6-1, 6-1

Q. Can you just walk us through the match and what you found most difficult today.

IGA SWIATEK: Honestly, there's nothing like to walk through because it was all pretty much the same from the beginning to the end. I couldn't really get my level up. Coco played good, but, yeah, I think it's, you know, on me that I didn't really move well, I wasn't ready to play back the shots with heaviness, and, yeah, with that kind of game like, yeah, it was pretty bad.

Q. Is this a bad day at the office, or do you feel there is something more to get out of this?

IGA SWIATEK: Honestly, I don't know now. For sure I feel like I haven't been moving well and, you know, the tennis also was like on and off, you know, for most of the tournament. So I wasn't really sure what I have in my tool box, you know, but yeah, for sure, like I didn't even have a plan B because nothing was working today, so, yeah.

Q. Given that you haven't been playing your best but you still managed to fight your way through to the semifinals, is there a positive to take from that that you're fighting no matter what?

IGA SWIATEK: Yeah, for sure, you know, I didn't play well even on these matches that I won. I think I, you know, pushed kind of with my head, you know, for more than I even like should, tennis-wise.

Yeah, like, today for sure everything kind of collapsed, you know, both tennis-wise and, yeah, I feel like I wasn't even in the right place with my feet, you know, before the shots. So, yeah, I wish I would have moved better, because I think that would get me, you know, any opportunity to bounce back, because this is usually what happens. But today, yeah, for sure I didn't move well.

Q. When you say you weren't able to move well, how does it mean, how does it feel for you, is it the heaviness in your legs, is it more you're thinking about something else, like how does it manifest?

IGA SWIATEK: Yeah, for sure I feel heavy, and you are like forcing everything instead of, you know, it going by kind of intuition and by itself, you know. Because I know how I can move, and usually I didn't have to think about it much. But for last weeks it hasn't been that easy. I've been like forcing myself to go lower, to be more precise with my feet, because it's not going by itself.

So hopefully one day it's going to click, but I'm not expecting anything, I'm just going to try to work on that.

Q. Are you linking that with your self confidence, your emotion?

IGA SWIATEK: No, because I felt fine today. Yeah, like I'm not a different player than I was like for past years in terms of my attitude or my emotions.

Q. Madi was saying yesterday because of the scheduling that these tournaments are longer, that the decision making of what to do next, I mean you probably don't have another match for another week or something. Do you tell yourself, I want to take a break for a couple days, do you get straight to Rome and start working, what's your mindset like?

IGA SWIATEK: Well, for sure I want to have some days off, especially because I didn't have, you know, after Stuttgart. So, yeah, I'll for sure chill, but honestly the coaches will do the schedule, so I'll see.

Q. Maybe it's a risky question, but I want to ask about the happiness on the court and the smile on the court, do you still enjoy being on the court in that moment or the past several months?

IGA SWIATEK: Well, I'm not going to smile if it's 6-1, 6-1, so, yeah.
