MUTUA MADRID OPEN

April 30, 2025

Iga Swiatek

Madrid, Spain

Press Conference

I. SWIATEK/M. Keys

0-6, 6-3, 6-2

THE MODERATOR: Congratulations, Iga, into the semifinals of Madrid. Can you tell us a bit of what happened in that first set?

IGA SWIATEK: Well, Madi played great, and I obviously didn't. So, yeah, the first set happened, but it didn't really matter.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. You told us yesterday that Diana had nothing to lose after the first set against you. Did you feel today after the first set that you had nothing to lose?

IGA SWIATEK: A little bit, but I think she's in a different position than I am, you know. But still, yeah, like when you have a score like that you just let it go, you know, because, honestly, you just need to change something.

But still, like if Madi would, you know, win another set like that, I would be like, Well, okay, she played great, you know. But I was, you know, there to use my chances, and that's what I'm happy about.

Q. Do you feel it's a match you won tactically more than anything else, after the first set that you changed so many things?

IGA SWIATEK: Yeah, well, the tactics was kind of the same. I think in the first set I just didn't make many balls in, you know. So, for sure when I just started getting some in I gave also her more chances to make some mistakes.

Tactically, yeah, when I felt like I can finally start playing, I did, you know, what I wanted to do from the beginning, so I'm happy with that. Yeah, that's it. I think, you know, the tactics didn't change, I just wasn't able to play in, you know, in the first set.

Q. Just to follow-up on that, why do you think you had so much trouble to get into that first set? Was it because she came really strong quickly or maybe something else?

IGA SWIATEK: I think she played great, and I didn't serve well. So, like, against a player like that when you're not going to serve well it's obvious that it's going to be tough. She was serving great, and she, in every service game she got like two, three points by aces or some amazing serves, like 190 or something, you know. So when I didn't get them back I had no chance to win a point. Then, when I didn't hold my serve, obviously, yeah, it became complicated.

But, you know, that's why it's good that we have second sets to just change something up. And maybe, yeah, I feel like for sure I started serving better and that helped me.

Q. Did a lot of Polish fans help you today, or it's obvious for you that they are travel around the world to support you?

IGA SWIATEK: Well, they are always there, but I don't take them for granted, so for sure I'm grateful that they're coming to every match. Sometimes they believe even more than I do, so I can take a lot of energy from them, and I really appreciate that.

But today I would say it was more about, you know, me and I just tried to be focused and in my bubble. So sometimes, yeah, it's also something that you learn, like when to kind of take energy from the outside and when to just focus on yourself, and I'm happy that they are there to support me.

Q. People say the ATP Tour is becoming more and more like the WTA tour. I think they mean it in a negative way. What do you think about this comparison?

IGA SWIATEK: I don't know what they mean. I have no, I need more details.

Q. People say that...

IGA SWIATEK: Yeah, but like what does it mean?

Q. No, the ATP Tour is more open now like the WTA circuit.

IGA SWIATEK: More open?

Q. This is good? This is bad?

IGA SWIATEK: I don't know, because last, I mean, Jannik and Carlos have been winning all the Grand Slams last years, you know. I don't think, I don't get it. I have no opinion then. I'm too stupid to answer that question.
