Quick Quotes

Q. That's a round anybody would love to have, like almost a perfect round.

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, I think I three-putted on 7 from like 20 feet to make par, and that would be the only thing, I think, for the round that you'd be like, that was the only not perfect thing for the day, I think.

Q. How would you describe it overall? Have you ever had a round like that?

LUCAS HERBERT: I mean, yeah. Like you just, just one of those rounds where everything comes together. I thought I played pretty decent the last two days, I just didn't get many breaks, and I just felt like today every time there was a line ball sort of thing I got the right kick and I'd make a putt where I needed to or just anything -- just that sort of stuff. It just kept the momentum going through the round. Look, I played great, really enjoyed feeling everything I felt the last few holes, but it's just one of those rounds where it all just clicks for you, and it was a pretty cool feeling to do it at an event like this.

Q. Was there a moment during the round where you thought, this isn't just your average round, you had something special going on?

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, I think once you're getting past 7-under, it's starting to get a pretty special round. I was playing nice. I thought I was going to get going there when I had that eagle putt and probably got a little excited and jammed it past and didn't make it coming back so that probably checked me back a little bit, and then all of a sudden I holed it for eagle and it was like, okay, this is back to one of those special rounds.

I just tried to kind of acknowledge that that was happening. I didn't try and block it out. I was just like, yeah, a really cool round is happening. I don't know the next time I'm going to get to do this. It's pretty rare, so I just want to enjoy it while I've got the chance to be involved in it.

Q. When did 59 come into your mind, if at all?

LUCAS HERBERT: I was just saying to the guys, the last five or six holes, literally everything went through my mind. I could shoot 59, I could win the tournament, Ripper could win from a team perspective, I could make a bunch of money, I could win and get into the spots for the U.S. Open and British Open. There was a stack of different things that I was like, all these are possibilities. I'm like, yeah, on top of a 59, as well.

I think maybe in the fairway on 12 was probably the first time I actually did the math and I was like, it's doable but it's hard. And then yeah, like I just didn't leave myself putts that were easy to be aggressive with the last two holes. It looked like -- it probably looks that not that hard a putt on 14 there for birdie, but that needed two inches more to go four feet past the hole. It was just such a tricky putt.

I did everything I could. I thought I played great golf. I'm really proud of the way I played.

Q. You tied the course record. Did you know that?

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, I knew Jon had it. I actually thought it might have been to my detriment. I thought he might have seen it late and tried to birdie a hole just to get in front of me just to spite me for tying his course record.

Yeah, it's pretty cool to have my name on that, especially with him, where -- he's a phenomenal player and someone I look up to a lot, so to have my name next to his as a course record, that's just really cool.

Q. You knew that you were essentially carrying the team (indiscernible).

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, but that's kind of the nature of this, right? There's been a ton of times on Sunday I've played poorly and the other boys have carried me. I could give you many examples of that. Feels like maybe I chalked one back up on the other side of things.

Look, it is what it is. The boys didn't come out and try and play poorly. So yeah, some days I'm carrying them, a lot of days they're carrying me.

It was a nice feeling there. Would have love to have obviously -- if they had have played a little better and we were up there on the podium spraying each other with champagne would have been nice, but I'm sure there won't be the last time we're right there in the lead, and I'm sure there will be plenty more times we'll be spraying champagne on each other.

Q. When you started the round you had a 0.01 percent chance of winning. That's what they were saying on TV. But it's golf; you never know.

LUCAS HERBERT: I would have said even less.

Q. It was a pretty incredible round.

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah. I mean, it was probably a good thing the leaders were so far in front because I never got to think about that. I was just kind of doing my own thing. I thought if I got to 10-under it would be a great day and something to be really proud of, and then I birdie 10 and eagle 11 and then all of a sudden you pass that number and you've got to reset the goals and keep going.

Q. Was there one shot you'd like to have back?

LUCAS HERBERT: Maybe the first putt on 7 when I had that eagle putt. But then again, if I don't three-putt that, maybe -- if I two-putt it, maybe I don't play the next few holes as well. Everything kind of happens for a reason.
