THE CHEVRON CHAMPIONSHIP

Lexi Thompson

The Woodlands, Texas, USA

The Club at Carlton Woods

Quick Quotes

Q. Here with Lexi Thompson after her third round of the Chevron Championship, a solid round today, a couple bogeys, a couple birdies. What's been working well for you? You have the highest greens in regulation across the field.

LEXI THOMPSON: Well, I didn't know that. But I got off to a little bit of a rocky start today with two bogeys in the first two holes but just tried to stay patient. I knew there was some birdie holes out there, even though a lot of them are just par holes and kind of run with it.

But just tried to stay patient. I knew I was hitting it well coming into the day, and if I hit an iffy shot, just kind of go with it and move on as quickly as I could. But yeah, I'm looking forward to tomorrow and seeing what I can bring.

Q. Those greens in regulation, too, how much do you think that's helped you this week out here?

LEXI THOMPSON: Yeah, it helps out a lot. This is not the easiest of golf courses, and with the rain it's playing long, and they haven't really -- I think they only moved one tee box up today, and I think that was on 16, and I still had an 8-iron in or 7-iron.

But yeah, it's playing a bit longer so the greens in regulation are definitely key. But you want to just give yourself the position for the second shot going into the greens.

Q. With those limited starts, what does it mean to put yourself in this position, period, to contend on Sunday for a major championship?

LEXI THOMPSON: It means a lot. Like I've told a lot of people, I'm still practicing and training a lot when I am home. It's just more I have the leisure of being able to take time off when needed. Every time I come out to play I'm still wanting to win and have that competitive edge. But it's just nice to have the life balance, as well. It's good to see the hard work paying off in some type of way.

Q. Does pressure feel any different this year compared to all the rest of the years as a semi-retired player?

LEXI THOMPSON: Yeah, I would definitely say it does a bit in a way. It's hard to describe because still, every time I tee it up there's that adrenaline rush of wanting to play well and those nerves and I think everybody kind of has that just wanting to play well and showing their hard work can pay off. But with me making the announcement knowing that I'm not going to play as much, I'm coming out here, if I play well, that's great; if I don't, it's just you move on and you go to the next one.

I know I'm just going to play less and less.

Q. Do you feel like on a smaller level that you move on from bad shots faster than you used to within a round?

LEXI THOMPSON: Yeah, a bit. I definitely do with my brother Curtis on the bag. We have a bit more fun out there. Yeah, I think that's key, too. Sometimes I can dwell maybe a little bit on them. But the key for golf is just knowing that there will be bad shots out there; you just have to move on from them as quickly as possible and know that you're going to hit good shots, as well.

Q. What do you like best about the last three rounds that you would take away overall about why you played so well?

LEXI THOMPSON: I would say just the way I stayed patient throughout the rounds. Like today with the start I could have let it just kind of crumble and I stayed patient and positive. Curtis was by my side being positive with me. That was a huge help. So I'm proud of myself for that, and just being able to come out here after last week, struggled a bit, and come out and play well.

Q. How much do you measure the quest to win another major? How much does that motivate and drive you?

LEXI THOMPSON: Oh, yeah, it drives me a lot. It drives me to win any tournament a lot. We're all out here wanting to do our best and wanting to win because we know what we're capable of and we know how hard we practice and train. So yeah, the drive is always there and always will be.

But for major championships, since I've won this one before, it's a special place in my heart. But I'm just going to go out there tomorrow, do my best, and that's all I can do.

Q. You're in pretty good position. Is there a certain number you think you may have to shoot for tomorrow or a number you're looking at?

LEXI THOMPSON: I don't really like to think of any numbers that I have to shoot in mind. All I can do is go out there, focus on myself being patient over each and every golf shot, visualizing and committing to my shot, my routine and controlling my emotions. That's all I can do. If I focus on a number to shoot, it's out of my control. I just need to focus on my shot at hand. That's all I can do.

Q. Several of the golfers haven't won on the Tour. You've got a good resume. You've got the experience. How much experience do you think is going to be important for tomorrow?

LEXI THOMPSON: I think it'll be very important. Knowing this golf course, it is new to all of us. It's only the third year for us. So it's new to all of us in that aspect. But having the experience in majors I think is important. But really we all have experience on every level, so it's a matter of just staying within ourselves.

Q. You talked about Curtis; I know he seems really upbeat, really positive, really happy out there. Does that help mitigate when it's a poor shot? Does he crack jokes and make you laugh in that moment instead of taking it seriously?

LEXI THOMPSON: Yeah, when is he not cracking jokes is the better question. He's just a riot. He's the personality of the family.

But it makes for a more enjoyable time-out there for sure. If we're on a roll, playing good, we're having a great time, but even when things get a little rocky, he's there to pick me up and make a joke. Then it's like, all right, my mind is off the bad shot. That's what I need.

Q. What's the driver strategy? How often are you hitting driver off the tee? Do you anticipate that might change as it dries out more tomorrow?

LEXI THOMPSON: I only hit it a few times out here. I hit it probably around five or so times, if I were to imagine. It just depends. But yeah, once it firms out a little bit it'll just be more 3-woods. But I've been hitting my 3-woods basically on every tee ball out there.

A few of the holes kind of run away and run into bunkers that you don't really want to be in, so it's all about placement.
