Quick Quotes
Q. Okay, here with Gianna Clemente. You're the only amateur to make the cut her at The Chevron Championship this week. What does that mean? I know there was eight amateurs in the field this week. What does this mean to you?
GIANNA CLEMENTE: Yeah, it's just super special. Definitely this golf course can be pretty tricky, so I can understand how there were some high numbers.
Yeah, I just really went out there and trusted my game and trusted my swing especially, and just tried to hit as many greens and fairways as I could.
Yeah, just happened to work.
Q. How did you stick with it through the completion of the round this morning?
GIANNA CLEMENTE: It was definitely difficult. We finished really late last night and it was kind of a rush just to get to sleep and get as many hours as I could.
Definitely an early morning, but wasn't too much golf. It was only three holes, so I feel like it was pretty easy. Started with a pretty simple par-3 so I think that kind of helped ease into it a little bit.
And, yeah, just made one birdie out there and just tried to just making pars honestly.
Q. Any thoughts on how you're going to prepare for the next round? I know you don't know the tee time yet. What's your plan for today with the different schedule?
GIANNA CLEMENTE: Yeah, I think just playing the same way that I have been. Just being really aggressive. I feel pretty good about my swing right now, so just going out there and attack the holes that are right and the hard holes just trying to hit the fairway and the green.
Which is the same thing I've been doing so just trying to keep with that.
Q. You also secured at least one LEAP point as of right now. Got one earlier at Thailand as well. What does that mean? I don't know if you were thinking about it heading into this week, but how nice does that feel to get another one?
GIANNA CLEMENTE: Yeah, for sure. Feels great. Definitely not the type of thing that I want to be thinking about on the golf course, but, yeah, it's awesome just to be able to secure that and maybe get two depending on how the weekend goes.
It feels really good to get that off my plate.
Q. I just have two: You said you have a busy summer coming up when we were talking. Just tell us about that stretch and how this major championship might be helping you have an advantage on the AJGA.
GIANNA CLEMENTE: Yeah, it's definitely busy and there are definitely a lot of tournaments coming up. I love that. I love playing tournaments. I love traveling. I would much rather be traveling and a bit sleep deprived than be home and bored.
I would definitely much rather be playing tournament. It's exciting. The summer season is my favorite part of the year, so I'm just excited for all the competitive rounds coming up.
Q. You mentioned you were playing The Nelly Invitational as well. Chevron made a big investment in that. Obviously made a big investment out here. How does it feel to see a company like Chevron investing in the amateur game as well as the majors here?
GIANNA CLEMENTE: I think it's great. I think would be a great opportunity for any junior to be able to play in a major championship.
The LPGA events I've played have been such great experience for me. Just have really showed me how amazing professional golf is and how much I really want to be a pro someday.
Yeah, it's a great opportunity for anybody in the field.
Q. And how much more comfortable do you feel like you're getting every time you play an LPGA Tour event? You've played quite a number of them.
GIANNA CLEMENTE: Yeah.
Q. Are you feeling more comfortable being out here at this level?
GIANNA CLEMENTE: So much more comfortable. I remember my first LPGA event. I felt overwhelmed, nervous, and I just felt -- there is so much going on like before the tournament and during the tournament, so now that I have a little bit of experience under my belt, by no means am I veteran, but a little bit.
I just feel so much more comfortable. Have so much more of a feel of the schedule and what it looks like before and after a round. So, yeah, it's getting a lot better for sure.
Q. Is there any players in particular you've gotten to know more by coming out here?
GIANNA CLEMENTE: Not a lot. I honestly kind of keep to myself a little bit. Definitely a little bit more on the introverted side. I actually played with Sophia Popov last two days, and she was super kind to me and super supportive.
We talked a lot pretty much all the fairways which a rare for me. Yeah, it was great to play with her and hear her story about how she got to where she is now.
Q. Any fun nuggets she gave you?
GIANNA CLEMENTE: I just thought it was really cool to hear about how she came back from having a kid and just how she's still out here playing. I think that's really cool. Definitely something that I would like to do someday and play on Tour for many years and then come back.
Yeah, just thought that was really cool to hear her story.
