Mexico City, Mexico
Club de Golf Chapultepec
Fireballs GC
Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome Fireballs GC. We are joined today by Luis Masaveu, David Puig, our captain, Sergio Garcia, and our hometown hero, Abraham Ancer. Abe does have to peel off about 10 minutes early, so we're going to front load any questions that you have for Abe first.
Welcome, guys. This is our third visit to Mexico and our very first visit to Mexico City. Can you talk a little bit about how special this country is, the culture, the food, the fans, and of course I'm going to start with Abe.
ABRAHAM ANCER: Thank you. I'm extremely excited. We all are. We definitely feel like a home team event for sure, and every time I come to Mexico, it's very exciting. Obviously I feel the nerves of playing at home, which is really cool, and we want to put on a really good show, and Mexico City is a really special place, I city that I love to visit, that I love to play golf in front of my people, and it's going to be a great week.
I think the Mexican culture is truly going to reflect what this event is all about.
Q. Sergio, how important is Mexico in the LIV Golf season-long calendar?
SERGIO GARCIA: Yeah, super important. I think it's a country that golf is growing a lot in the last few years. Obviously a lot of really good Mexican players have been coming out with Abraham and Carlos and some others.
Yeah, it's a great week. We're super excited about it. I feel like being Spanish, I get treated here like if I'm another Mexican. They treat me like I'm part of the culture and the country and everything, so it's always a great treat, and always super exciting.
I remember when we played here a few times before, the energy that you could feel in the crowds and how excited everyone was. Yeah, really looking forward to it, and hoping to put on a great performance like we've been doing all year and see if we can give them something really, really nice to cheer for.
Q. David, Luis, do you guys feel a little bit of extra pressure here supporting your teammate Abe and performing well this week on home soil?
LUIS MASAVEU: Yeah, obviously we are far away from Spain, but everyone speaks Spanish, so I feel close to it. Everyone is super nice to us.
Yeah, I think it would be really nice for us to win. We're going to go for it. We're going to have a lot of fun on the course, and yeah, let's try to do it.
Q. David, do you feel extra pressure supporting Abe this week?
DAVID PUIG: I don't know if extra pressure, but it's awesome to be on his team this week. We're obviously one team, so we all play for the team, but obviously Abe here being Mexican, we all know it's super important week for him, and it's obviously super important for us, as well.
There's probably going to be a little bit of extra pressure because obviously we want to do good here maybe more than in any other places that we play throughout the year. But yeah, we'll give our best, and hopefully that's enough to have an awesome week.
Q. The Fireballs are currently leading in the season-long team standings. Sergio, David, you guys are both in the top 10 for individual standings. Abe is obviously our local hero here. Can the Fireballs continue their success this week in Mexico?
SERGIO GARCIA: Yes, why not? Obviously we've been playing very well, all of us. I think that Abe is just outside the top 10 in the individual standings; Luis has been having some really good solid weeks, so you can see that he's feeling more and more comfortable as he's spending more weeks with us here, and obviously David, we know the kind of talent he has, and he's been playing great.
We're really, really excited about the challenge and what this week brings. It would be a dream come true to be able to win it here, not only for the team but for Abe. I know we all know how much it would mean to him, and we're obviously going to give it our best.
Q. The course is currently situated at 7800 feet above sea level, so obviously the altitude is going to present some unique challenges this week in controlling distance. Can you just talk a little bit about this course, the elevation and how you're preparing for the week?
ABRAHAM ANCER: Yeah, it's definitely a very unique week. You're going to see a lot of launch monitors on the range and on the golf course, everybody trying to figure out their formula of how to attack the altitude because definitely for some people it can be 10 percent, maybe for huge that hits it really, really far and high, could be 15, 17 percent. It adds another layer of trying to figure out how to play this course, which I think is a phenomenal course. It makes you think off the tee, as well. You can be very aggressive or you can lay back on a lot of these par-4s, which I think makes it a really good golf course.
But yeah, for me, I've got a little bit of experience here in the previous events that I played, and I've had some notes from previous years that hopefully they will help me because still, you hit some shots and they tend to maybe fly a little bit farther, a little bit shorter. But we're all going to be dealing with the same, so hopefully us four, we're going to be able to really manage that in the right way and just have a lot of birdie looks.
Q. David, you're one of the longest hitters out here. How is the elevation going to impact your game?
DAVID PUIG: Yeah, it's my first time here in Mexico and playing with elevation and altitude. The most important part for me is to commit before I hit every shot because sometimes it's hard to believe that you can hit a 50-degree 190 yards. I'm not used to that. So committing is going to be a super important factor, and obviously preparing as well as I can throughout these next two days to kind of get all my yardages good, and again, just try to commit and execute the best way I can.
