J. PAOLINI/C. Gauff
6-4, 6-3
THE MODERATOR: Jasmine, a great win for you today in straight sets. Talk us through your thoughts on the match and what you thought you did really well today.
JASMINE PAOLINI: Yes, I think I played aggressive, and I was so consistent, not too many mistake. I think I did a great match at the end.
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. You played so great this week. I was wondering, you had such a great year last year, if the pressure to come in this year, did you have some thoughts about it? Because maybe some people said, well, it should be interesting if you can stay on top or if it was just one good year. How did you approach this year?
JASMINE PAOLINI: I'm curious to see that. I don't know. I'm trying to not to compare to the last year. I'm trying to take the positive things from the last year, which is many matches that I played really well.
I was really consistent, and I think that the experience that I made last year make me a better player, but trying not to have too many expectation, because, I mean, a little bit is normal, but trying to keep them low and trying to focus on the positive things, which is more confidence, because last year I played really well.
Q. That aggressive game style of yours, staying close to the baseline and all that stuff, did you have, when you were younger, an idol to play like that?
JASMINE PAOLINI: You know, I don't know. When I step on court, like hitting the ball strong, it's what makes me enjoying playing tennis, you know. I like to, like, kind of hit the ball so hard.
So that made me feel joy, you know. I think that's why I'm playing like that, because I like to play like that (smiling).
Q. But was there one person, one player...
JASMINE PAOLINI: Honestly, I was watching a lot Federer. I was cheering for Federer. I like also how Serena was playing. I mean, also Nadal. But, you know, I don't know. I just like to play so strong.
I remember my first coach was repeating to my serve, Try sometimes to put the ball in, you know, and not many mistakes, one more rally.
I was, like, Yes, yes, okay. And then boom. (Laughter.)
Q. Renzo told you to play more spinning, I guess?
JASMINE PAOLINI: Yes, of course, because sometimes was a little bit too much, and to find a little bit of consistent, you have to choose the right ball to try to push. Yeah.
Q. Sabalenka tomorrow. You have won a couple of times, lost a couple of times. Miami wasn't that good.
JASMINE PAOLINI: I don't know. Miami, I think she played too good. Unbelievable performance of the serve, not too many mistakes.
I don't know. I think, like, she was playing too good there. Hopefully tomorrow it's going to be another story, another match. Hopefully I can, you know, play better, make her, you know, play a little bit worse somehow, trying to add problems to her.
Let's see if tomorrow is going to work a little bit better. Yeah, looking forward to it.
