Quick Quotes
Q. How would you compare round 1 and round 2?
COLLIN MORIKAWA: Very different. I was very patient. I said that yesterday about yesterday's round. Today I was just in a really bad head space through five holes. Fifth hole might have been the worst putt I think in this tournament and probably will go down as the worst putt I've hit in a long time.
Just had to get out of that. I just had to get out of my own head and start playing golf. Talked to J.J. a little bit and was able to kind of free up after that.
Q. Was it talking to J.J. that got you out of it?
COLLIN MORIKAWA: Yeah, look, it's such a mental game that sometimes you spend so much time out there in your own head and your mind starts to wander.
1, I felt like I hit decent shots.
2, bunker. Picked the wrong number on 2 for my third shot over the green.
3, lay up to have a good wedge, spin it off the green.
4, bad swing.
It was kind of piling up in the wrong direction. Thankfully I turned it around. I needed to.
Look, we're still in this. I've got two more days. I don't know what the weather looks like, but I feel like I still have a shot in this.
Q. You said yesterday that sort of all aspects of your game were just a little bit off. Did any of them feel better today?
COLLIN MORIKAWA: Yeah, I feel like after 5 essentially everything started to click a little bit. I felt like I was hitting my shots, hitting my numbers. It's weird. I haven't felt like I've had a lot of iron shots. It's kind of been with the wind a lot of wedges or a lot of long irons.
That's just kind of the way it's going to play when it's blowing 15, 20. Hopefully tomorrow you just get in a rhythm a little bit. I've just got to get off to a better start with 2 and 3 out there.
Q. Do you like sort of being five back, get out there and post a number --
COLLIN MORIKAWA: Yeah, I'm going to have to post a number. These guys, where Rosey is at, the guys are at 7, 6. They shoot 3-under and they're close to 10 right there. I'm going to have to post a number, but I feel like it's all coming together.
Even kind of wish I had the last putt back. But everything is kind of coming together, and I've just got to be ready on that first tee tomorrow.
Q. What do you feel like maybe the main key is for you to do something like that tomorrow?
COLLIN MORIKAWA: Just be ready on hole 1. Kind of be a little more free out there. The way I played the last, say, 13, 14 holes, it's doable, and it felt great. It feels great when you're playing in that space. It's just sometimes you're just not there.
I've just got to relieve that tension a little bit come first hole tomorrow.
Q. Is it sort of a positive that you haven't quite had your best stuff and you're still in contention at the Masters?
COLLIN MORIKAWA: Yeah, in a way. I wish I was a little close to the lead or in the lead. But yeah, it's nice. I feel like I've gotten a lot out of these two rounds in a good way. I feel like I've let some squirrelly shots go.
But look, it's right there. I've shot -- I don't know what my lowest round here is, 4- or 5-under maybe, but that's what it's going to take tomorrow for me to give myself a good chance on Sunday. It's close. It's very, very close. I've seen spurts of it. I just have to be on myself, like I said, when I wake up going into tomorrow.
