Quick Quotes
Q. First round end. Probably not the score you wanted to shoot today, but how would you assess this round of golf?
TAYLOR PENDRITH: Yeah, I did not score the ball very well. I hit a couple really good shots, and I got fooled by the wind a couple times on the back nine that led to bogeys.
My first birdie was on a pretty famous hole, I guess, so that was cool. That was the highlight of the day, I guess. Nice to have my first round under my belt here, I guess. I'm disappointed obviously with how I scored the ball, but learned a few things watching Freddie play, just kind of plot himself around the golf course and miss it in the right spots.
It's tough to learn this place perfectly your first time around. Yeah, I'll get some rest and do some work and hopefully have a good one tomorrow.
Q. How did you feel going into the 1st tee the first round at the Masters? Was it everything you dreamt of, the jitters that you would get?
TAYLOR PENDRITH: Definitely. It was pretty cool. I came up here and putted at like 7:40 before and felt good, felt good during the warmup. Then hit my last couple putts and walked through everybody to the 1st tee.
It was a cool moment. I was for sure nervous. I kind of settled in, I'd say, after a few holes and hit some good shots. Just didn't score good at all today.
Q. How appreciative are you to be out here? Your first Masters. I'm sure any other tournament, if you were to shoot 6-, 7-over, probably not in the same mood. What about this place today was different?
TAYLOR PENDRITH: It's incredible. Everything about it is awesome. My first round, first tournament round here, it's obviously not the score I would have wanted, but it's amazing.
So many patrons out there. You can hear the roars and know what hole they're coming from. It's just a really, really sweet place. I'm happy that I'm here.
Yeah, a 77 would feel horrible at most places, but it's pretty cool to be here. Hopefully I have a good one tomorrow.
Q. We talked a little bit about how different the golf course played Tuesday, Wednesday, versus when you were here a week and a half ago. First round of actual competition, much difference from practice rounds in your mind?
TAYLOR PENDRITH: Yeah, I would say so. I kind of feel like Tuesday, Wednesday I was feeling a little overwhelmed maybe just hitting so many shots to different pin locations. Obviously today there's only one. You can kind of plan a little bit better of where you're trying to come in from and where to miss.
The greens are fast and getting firm. Yeah, the first hole, I was super nervous. I hit it left and hit a nice shot from the trees and left myself in a pretty good spot. Didn't hit a good chip and didn't hit a good putt.
Like I said, it's such a cool place and an honor to be here. It's an unbelievable tournament.
Q. What was it like playing with Freddie today? What kind of conversations did you have? I saw him sort of walking up here with you. What was that like?
TAYLOR PENDRITH: I was asking him how far he hits his 6 hybrid compared to his 6-iron. He holed one, and it was an unbelievable shot.
Yeah, he was great. Just to kind of see how he plays this place. He made an unreal birdie on 1 from long left and just putted it up the hill. I mean, that's a tough up-and-down let alone to hole it.
17, he hit it long left, which is kind of like where you're supposed to hit it to that pin.
So I learned a few things from him for sure just watching him play. He's played here many, many times. He played awesome today. 1-under par is a fantastic round. He played really steady. Just kind of missed it in the right places and pecked away.
Q. You seemed to have a few good conversations together. How cool was it?
TAYLOR PENDRITH: So cool. He's a legend in the game and a legend here. It's his 40th time playing the Masters. People love him. They show great respect to him. They're all cheering for him. It was really cool to play with him in my first and his 40th. He's a great guy.
