MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 10, 2025

Jason Day

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. Anytime you go bogey free at Augusta National it's a good day. You've been playing some nice golf lately. Is this a progression of what you've been doing recently?

JASON DAY: Yeah, I mean, obviously I got sick at THE PLAYERS and then had some decent play at Houston. Actually hit it a lot better than I thought and just putted terribly.

Today it was good. I had a really good strategy out there. I think I didn't get myself out of position too bad, and then when I did get myself out of position, I had a relatively easy up-and-down. Unfortunately I just missed a few too many opportunities for birdies.

But sitting at 2-under right now in fifth place, I'm pretty happy with it.

Q. Historically how have you felt about your starts at Augusta? Do you feel like you've been a fast starter here?

JASON DAY: I have no idea. You probably know more than me. The funny thing about Augusta is it's very, very easy to psych yourself out, depending on how the course is. You know that the progression of play from day-to-day gradually usually gets harder.

Saturday is usually kind of the hardest day where we try and survive and then obviously they give us a little bit more opportunity on Sunday to have some more birdies, which is nice.

Very receptive out there in regards to the greens. Not overly quick on the greens, but we know that we're going to have some wind tomorrow, so that will make it very interesting.

Q. Do you feel like you've come in under the radar a little bit?

JASON DAY: Here?

Q. Yeah.

JASON DAY: I feel like I'm definitely coming in under the radar. I'm not to the point of how Scottie has been playing, how Rory has been playing, some of the other guys. I feel very just comfortable with where my game is at right now. I've just got to do some work on the greens. Hopefully some more putts drop.

Q. How do you not take (indiscernible)?

JASON DAY: Yeah, that's a good one. It's hard because you sit there and you're like, okay, well, you have to acknowledge that it is going to be tough and you're going to get some breaks where you feel like you should have got a better break than what it did.

You've just got to go through the process of everything, make sure that you gather all the information because the thing is that it's very, very easy to kind of push and start being aggressive, and you cannot do that around here.

You've just got to just ease your way into it and just hopefully you gain some momentum. You cannot -- I was talking to Min Woo Lee about it yesterday. We played Tuesday and Wednesday. It was one of the days. I said, you can't overpower this golf course. He's got the power to overpower a golf course.

Kind of the same thing as when Bryson came out and said his par is 67. You can't expect to overpower this golf course. You have to respect it enough to be able to go, okay, I'm going to hit it here when I'm out of position.

2, for instance. I hit it short in line with the green. The play is like kind of front of the green and to the right. I had a pretty awful chip over that bunker. When you are in positions like that, just not trying to bite off too much and then just ease your way into it.

Because it's very easy to get yourself out of position quick and start pressing and then you start making mistake after mistake and then you start thinking about it more and it's just like -- you're going to have an early week.

Q. There's a lot of recent trends here with the eventual winners being in the top 10 after the opening round. Do you feel like that weighs as much as the physical part of how guys are playing?

JASON DAY: Yes, I do, actually, because I just struggle to think that anyone can shoot a low one -- it has been done. I remember Danny Willett shooting a low one here. I think it was like 66 or 67 to come back and win the tournament. But the better you start, obviously, the easier it gets as long as you keep that level of play up. Very pleased with how everything went.

Q. As a fashion plate yourself, what did you think of Cam's blazer?

JASON DAY: You know what, dude, I don't knock anything. Honestly, you've seen what I've worn in the past, so I clearly don't knock anything.

I think it looked great. If he rocks it, then I'm happy for him. I actually went up to him and felt it and felt his pants. I'm like, if he can play in it, great. I would have buttoned it up. I would have had at least buttoned up, but he played with it open.

I don't mind it. I could see myself playing in something like that. So just putting it out there.

Q. You obviously have experienced wit pushing the boundaries of fashion yourself. Is it cool to come here where the patrons are all dressed up, as well?

JASON DAY: I noticed a lot of people wear green here. It's fantastic. This is just a very classy group of people that come through here. Everyone is dressed nice. Everyone is enjoying themselves.

For me to be able to -- because at the start of the week -- well, when we sent this script in, it was this same pattern with the pants, so that would have been a little bit rich, unfortunately.

So we kind of toned it down with some black pants, and I think it looked good in the end. When you're walking the golf course, everyone looks like they're having a good time. Everyone is dressed up really nice.

It's kind of like a horse racing event or something like that when everyone kind of comes out and they're wearing some really nice clothes. They just do it right here at Augusta.
