Augusta, Georgia, USA
Quick Quotes
Q. Talk about coming back to Augusta, the feelings and your game?
THOMAS DETRY: Yeah, well the feelings first of all this is my first Masters ever, so it's pretty incredible to be here amongst the patrons and really experience the full thing from inside the ropes.
I used to come here with my college when I used to be in college. We used to come here every Monday, so I've been on the property already. I had a very generous member who invited me three weeks ago, so I sort of played the golf course three weeks ago as well, which was really a dream come true, to be honest.
This week is incredible. We feel like we had the bad weather -- we have now the bad weather behind or back with yesterday's rain. Looks like it's going to be a beautiful week the rest of the week.
Very much enjoying this week and even more tomorrow. I've got the par-3 contest ready with the family. It's going to be pretty special moment, I think.
Q. Any special memories of those times you came in college?
THOMAS DETRY: Yeah, sort of just -- I mean, I think one of incredible memories is when you arrive here for the first time and seeing the wide open space and seeing the golf course that you watched on TV so many years as a kid. When you come here it's a "wow" affect. That was well what struck me the most. What I thought was incredible was the slopes you don't see on TV, but especially when you come here the first time you get to appreciate it even more.
Q. So the difference between coming at those times and coming here at the reality of the Masters...
THOMAS DETRY: That's definitely is quite different experience. I must say I was a little bit nervous yesterday on the first tee. I wasn't really nervous the other day, but I was a little bit nervous yesterday morning with the patrons out.
Just being in the middle of the fairway, it's incredible. Properly seeing the course, preparing for the major championship, you know, fast greens, firm and fast as well. That sort of makes it even more special.
Obviously the beautiful nature, rhododendrons are flowering. I really appreciate that.
Q. We were talking before you've been in contention in other majors a few times. What is your vision of this week?
THOMAS DETRY: Yeah, sort of I've had a great start of the year. Start of my year has been really, really good. I'm sort of where I want to be, and I'm sort of where I want to be in terms of FedExCup and world rankings as well.
I finally cracked the top 50 in the world. Top 30 in the world now. Been playing a lot of really, really good golf.
Yeah, I'm just ready. I think my last three majors I finished 13th, 4th, and 14th. Never got out of top 15 in the last three majors, so I feel like I can contend.
I won Phoenix, which was one the top-ranked tournaments on the PGA TOUR, so I proved to myself I can play against the best players in the world. I hope I can achieve that this week again.
