AFRICA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

February 3, 2025

Keegan Shutt

Malelane, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Quick Quotes

Q. Keegan, back competing in the Africa Amateur championship. A special championship for you last year, a record 62. If we could reflect back on that, what do you remember from that final round? Was that a bit of a blur or what do you remember most about it?

KEEGAN SHUTT: I remember everything about it, every shot. I think that was one of my best -- well, it was my best round of my life. Just took a while for it to actually sink in. I was very, very happy with what I managed to do, and if I could do anything like that again this year, I'd be very, very chuffed.

Q. How much are you looking forward to the week ahead and competing again in this event?

KEEGAN SHUTT: Oh, it means everything to me. I think I can talk for most people when I say this is the best tournament in Africa, just the way you guys set it up and do everything. Thank you guys. It's really, really good.

Q. You're part of the Africa high performance programme. How much of an opportunity is that for you and the development of your own golf career?

KEEGAN SHUTT: It's great what African guys are doing for us. African high performance is helping us a lot. I think there's about 15 of us, and I think every one of us have gotten a bit better as we've progressively gone through the high performance camps and all of that, so what those guys are doing for us, it's really good.

Q. How important is the championship to the continent? What is it doing for African golf in terms of inspiring people to play the sport?

KEEGAN SHUTT: Yeah, I think it does inspire a lot of people. I think it really does inspire a lot of African guys to come out and compete and they see what's happening with golf in Africa because I don't think it's as big as everyone seems. But yeah, it's really getting guys to come out and do better than what they have been.

Q. Obviously for the winner of this championship, some life-changing opportunities, exemptions into The Open, into other events. How much of a draw is that for you and other players? How important is it?

KEEGAN SHUTT: I mean, to play in the Open, I think it's a dream for every single one of us since we were a kid. To play in the majors, there's nothing better you want to do as a golfer. Yeah, it's just really big, this tournament.
