MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 14, 2024

Tyrrell Hatton

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. I think you'll finish in the top 12, so a couple of big objectives achieved.

TYRRELL HATTON: Well, it's T11 at the moment. I see those guys out on the golf course, and if you hit the right shots, you're going to have chances. I mean, finishing bogey-bogey is just hard to take.

Again, I played some really good golf today. Obviously had that really short putt to go 6-under on 14, and it was such a horrible little putt to have. You're starting it a cup outside the hole from three feet, and you feel like you're hitting it an inch in front of you, to try and describe it.

I actually feel like I hit a really good putt, obviously just underread it. In those situations it's easier to almost hit it too hard because you have to hit it so soft to hit it through the break.

Then yeah, just sort of stuttered my way in. It's not the worst tee shot on 17, but it's a hard tee shot. You're just blocked out if you're not in the center of the fairway. I messed up with the second shot. I was worried about hitting it too hard and then didn't hit it hard enough, and leaving yourself 50 yards there was shocking when, if I'd actually got it into the greenside bunker, it wasn't necessarily -- it still wasn't an easy up-and-down, but it was a lot easier than from where I left it.

Then 18, I've now played that in 4-over this week. It's just a horrible tee shot for me with where the trees sort of hang. I fade the ball with driver. I really struggled to get it really neutral.

I feel like I actually got a little bit lucky with where the ball finished and then obviously chipped it out and hit a pretty good third shot in. Seeing Will's putt, it looked on a great line, and it turned loads at the end to miss low. So then mine is literally right edge with two, three feet to go. I was like, I can't miss, and it doesn't move and stays high.

It's frustrating. I've hit a perfect putt I wanted to on the last. Unfortunately it didn't go in. I just have to hope now that doesn't cost me an invite here for next year.

Q. When you got to 14, you had the six-footer. Were you thinking you've got the par-5 coming up after that, a couple more shots, two or three more shots and --

TYRRELL HATTON: No, I wasn't trying to -- I was trying not to think of 15 until I got there. That hole lives rent-free in my head. I hate it. I absolutely hate it. And I think it hates me with the scores that I end up producing on it. Again, I've played that hole in 4-over this week.

Yeah, 15 and 18, I'm 8-over for the tournament. You take them out, and it shows that I've played some really good golf. Can't do anything about it now.

Q. That putt at 15 almost typified -- you were perplexed how it ended up behind the hole there.

TYRRELL HATTON: It was more the fact, the sheer speed of it. Again, I managed to leave myself probably the fastest putts I've ever had in my life on the last -- pretty much the last five holes. I hit good putts on -- probably 17 was a bit of a whiff, like trying to guide it down there. But every other one I hit a good putt. As I said, still tough to take to finish bogey-bogey.

Q. When you walk away, when you get a chance to reflect, do you feel like you've made some strides here this week in terms of how to manage this course?

TYRRELL HATTON: I mean, I've doubled my tally now for rounds in the 60s. I don't think there's another golf course in the world that I'll play 25 times and only shoot in the 60s twice. It's a really hard golf course, one that I've always really struggled on.

It's just more down to the fact of my shot shape, and I'm not going to change my golf swing or how I want to play golf just to try and get around one golf course. Around most courses, it's fine. It's just here, they just love having trees on the front left of tee boxes.

It would be nice if we come back and they just put a few on the right just to take out some of the people that draw it, mess them up for a change.

Overall if you said that I was -- I think at the start of the week if someone said you'd be T11 walking off 18, I'd have been pretty happy with that. Obviously I want to come here and give myself a chance to win, but with how bad my record has been, it's hard to be really positive. But I'm proud of how I've played for the majority of this tournament.

Q. This being your first time back since going to LIV, have you enjoyed competing against people you haven't seen for a while again?

TYRRELL HATTON: Absolutely. I have friends on the PGA TOUR, and it was so nice to see them. It's only been a couple of months, but it's great. I get on well with quite a few of the guys. It was a warm reception coming back.

In some ways you're always a bit nervous coming back, but yeah, I think when I messaged the group chat, to the Ryder Cup chat to tell the lads that I was going, I was nervous sending the message. Obviously I was nervous joining LIV, as well. But the messages that I got back was like really positive and made me feel at ease.

As I said, it's been great to see those guys this week. I'm looking forward to seeing them again next month at the U.S. PGA.

Q. Does it make you at all think about the future, as a bit of potential (indiscernible).

TYRRELL HATTON: Well, I think we all hope it does come together. How it obviously works out is almost anyone's guess and for other people to worry about. For me, I've made a decision to play LIV Golf, and I'm still looking at trying to play events on the DP World Tour, which guys have been able to do over the last couple of years, and the guys know which events I'm trying to play. We'll see how it all pans out.

Yeah, hopefully it does.

Q. Is there anything that sticks out in your mind, anything you remember when you messaged the group chat?

TYRRELL HATTON: I'm not going to single anyone out. Just in general I had really nice messages from pretty much all the guys. That was nice because obviously they're good friends. Like Rome was incredible. We had such a special week together. They're people I care about, too.

The fact that they were very positive made me feel a lot better.
