MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 13, 2024

Tyrrell Hatton

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. You played really well most of the day, tough finish. How do you evaluate today?

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, it's tough to take. I don't know how I have to play golf around here to shoot under par. Like it's now my 23rd tournament round. I've got four rounds under par.

I don't know what to say about the last there. The greens are getting quicker, but I'm putting up the hill. I actually felt like I'd left the putt a foot short. My face has been like good all day. It's gone like three foot past, and the cup's sitting like that.

You can't see it on TV or whatever, but it's an interesting slope that it's on. It's hard. With even that short putt I can feel the wind on my back as well. So that doesn't make the right-to-left putt any easier.

Obviously I hit it a little bit firm. It looks horrific on TV, but if you're putting on -- if it's a flat putt, it's going a foot past, two foot past, not six foot, eight foot past.

As I said, I don't know what I have to do around this place to get some good fortune and actually shoot under par and get a score that I deserve.

Q. Despite Tiger obviously not playing well, it looked like you guys had some laughs out there. What was your experience like playing with him?

TYRRELL HATTON: I've said the kid inside of me playing with Tiger at the Masters, like that's really cool. That's certainly not lost on me.

But at the same time, I'm going out there competing, trying to put together the best round I can and trying to move up the leaderboard, which for 17 1/2 holes I feel like I did a really good job of.

Yeah, I'm devastated, to be honest.

Q. You just seemed to hit the ball so well and the cup so well with so many putts as well. You were striking the ball well, weren't you?

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, like I said. I've had a lot of good shots today, a lot of good putts. Even putts on 16 and 17, they've got a great chance.

Yeah, it's brutal for me at the moment to be honest.

Q. What's your level of frustration right now?

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I feel like I'm putting on a brave face for what I want to talk about or say.

Q. You played with Tiger before?

TYRRELL HATTON: I played with him at Riviera in '22. And maybe the WGC in Mexico in 2018.

Q. How did he play out there today?

TYRRELL HATTON: Sure, he didn't hit it how he wanted to, but also like putts that he had, like the greens are so fast out there. You guys, you don't realize, even a 2 1/2 foot putt is just brutal. They've got so much turn. You start it a centimeter outside of your start line and it's going to miss.

Then depending on the pace you've hit it at, who knows how far away it's going to finish up. It's just it's so hard it's only going to get firmer and faster. The weather is absolutely perfect now, and it's going to be great tomorrow. I'm sure it's going to be an exciting finish, but I feel like certainly with that double on the last there, if I had holed that and got in, what would that be, level par, I probably still would have been a little bit too far back to be honest.

It still would have made Sunday a little bit more exciting for me, whereas currently we're at T23. Is it top 12 get --

Q. It's top 12.

TYRRELL HATTON: See, we were right there coming up the last. See, I've got 18 holes tomorrow to try to claw them shots back, but it's just a brutal way to finish the round.

Q. Did you have a wedge issue at 2? If you looked at your wedge --

TYRRELL HATTON: It was really weird. I actually struck the shot like pretty good, like I had paint on the club. So normally that means it's going to spin.

But when the ball landed, it looked like I did a top flight. It just had no spin and just like went over the back of the green.

It turned out it wasn't the worst place it could be, but you still want to give yourself a chance from 60-odd yards.

Q. Do you ever allow yourself to stop and appreciate being here when you are on the grounds?

TYRRELL HATTON: I think like, yeah, when you get the invite around sort of Christmas, early in the new year, and it's a very, very nice letter to be opening. You start the week, it's always nice to be back. This is my eighth one, so I stay generally in the same house 5 out of the 8 years. So it feels familiar when you come back, so it's nice to have that.

I just wish I could score better around this golf course.
