AFRICA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

February 22, 2024

Ivan Verster

Malelane, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Quick Quotes

Q. 3-under par 69. How was the performance today?

IVAN VERSTER: Good. I struggled a bit in the beginning. I was 1-under through 2. Made bogey on 6; messed around, made a good bogey, so I'm happy with that. Unfortunately three-putted 8, birdied 9, missed like a short one on 10. Then really got going from there.

Q. Three birdies in a row. Talk us through them.

IVAN VERSTER: It was nice. 11, hit it to about 10, 15 foot, made the putt; 12, almost holed out; then 13, got unlucky. I was hoping actually for eagle, but it was a good birdie nonetheless on that hole. I'll take it any day.

Q. How nice was it to finish with a birdie at the last?

IVAN VERSTER: No, it's really nice. Whenever you can hit that green in two or be able to go for it, you have to hit a good shot, so it's really pleasing to end the round with a birdie.

Q. 18 seems to be quite tricky for people. Getting a birdie there really is a bonus, right?

IVAN VERSTER: Yeah, definitely. If you miss the fairway, it's almost a guaranteed lay-up. The rough is so thick, you're either going to hit it 20 short or it's going to hit it long, catch a flier and you're straight over the green and you're dropping. I've done that in the past. I've made a 9 on that hole, so that's always in the back of my head, but hopefully for this week it's staying away, so just happy to finish off with a birdie.

Q. You're right there in contention; how confident are you feeling going into the weekend?

IVAN VERSTER: Good. Putter has been -- like I said yesterday, the putter was a bit cold a couple of weeks, but hitting the ball nicely, rolling in a few putts, and on this course that's all you need. Excited to play with Altin tomorrow. Should probably be a draw, but anyway, excited for the weekend.
