AL DIVISION SERIES: RANGERS VS ORIOLES

October 7, 2023

Brandon Hyde

Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Oriole Park at Camden Yards

Baltimore Orioles

Postgame 1 Press Conference

Texas 3, Baltimore 2

Q. What were you seeing with Bradish today, what made you decide to take him out?

BRANDON HYDE: Just gave up a couple of runs there in the 4th. I thought he was still throwing the ball well. Mainly some singles -- ground ball singles. And then just with the lefty up and a runner on base, just went with Coulombe there to either they were going to pinch-hit or let the left hit off Coulombe.

Q. The steal attempt, talk about it in the ninth inning?

BRANDON HYDE: A little miscommunication there.

Q. With the starting pitching situation, did you build your lineup knowing you were going to have the opportunity to go to Frazier go to O'Hearn at some point.

BRANDON HYDE: I didn't know how far Heaney was going to go. It's tough when you're not sure how far he's going to go. I assumed four innings or so. And figured that Dunning or someone else would get the bulkhead of that game so had Frazier and O'Hearn ready there.

Q. With 84 pitches with Bradish, is it a situation -- he obviously had a layoff, did pitch a lot of pitches in his last. Did that factor into it all?

BRANDON HYDE: No, we were down 2-1, and he just gave up two runs the inning before. And I don't think he's as sharp as he is usually. But he punched out nine and had really good stuff.

Q. What did you see from the bats today?

BRANDON HYDE: We're just not going to -- this is a tough team to beat if you score two runs. They're unbelievably patient. They don't chase out of the zone. We did a great job on the mound, the three runs. We didn't have the offense today, we didn't create traffic. We did some walks, but, you know, Chapman pitched out of the jam in the 8th. We didn't have a ton of scoring opportunities besides that.

Q. Do you think guys were trying to do too much? How would you characterize it?

BRANDON HYDE: I think Heaney threw the ball well to start the game. We saw that in May they pitched well, also. We just didn't get any big hits today. Besides Santader's homer, we didn't have a ton of offense.

Q. Obviously the crowd, the atmosphere was very high level. Do you think there's an element of guys just adjusting to this environment and the stakes of this game?

BRANDON HYDE: No, I thought we got beat 3-2. I thought they pitched well. We couldn't create enough stuff offensively. We threw the ball well. I thought the environment was unbelievable. It was really loud early in the game, to start the game. Thank you fans for showing up. That was a special environment for our guys to play in. We just got beat.

Q. What did you see from DL Hall today?

BRANDON HYDE: He went an inning and two-thirds, punched out a few. He's been doing that since September. He's got lefties and righties out with great stuff. He picked up five big outs in a big part of the game.

Q. You've been in this situation before, big series, lose the first game, how does the team respond?

BRANDON HYDE: We respond fine. In the last week or so of the season, we had a tough time scoring early. And take a lot of pressure off a lot of people on the mound, on themselves if we try to get a few runs across early in the game.
