BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

September 15, 2023

Thomas Detry

Virginia Water, Surrey, England

Wentworth Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Thomas, a round of 67 and 68 sees you in prime position as it stands at the top of that leaderboard. What emotions will you have later this evening as you reflect on your opening start here?

THOMAS DETRY: Emotions. Definitely different than last year. Obviously we all know what happened last year. Still had a good week last year, though, at the Wentworth.

Yeah, so very pleased, to be honest. I felt very calm out there on the course. My game is in great shape. So hopefully I can keep that same rhythm and that same feeling for the next two days.

But, yeah, it was really good. I made some great putts, obviously got off to a bogey start, but then after that, I didn't really make any mistakes. And, yeah, I think looking forward to the weekend.

Q. The course obviously looks beautiful. Rough is up. There seems to be more of a premium on approach shots, and there's a lot of putts that have taken the field by surprise. Is there more nuance to the West Course this year?

THOMAS DETRY: Yeah, I mean, we all know how wet this summer has been out here. So the rough has really grown thick. I personally played a few times offensive off the tee as well instead of I would have usually hit driver or 3-wood. Now I take a club less as well to just make sure I'm in the fairway because, really, on some of the holes, if you hit it in the rough, you've got no chance of even reaching the green or getting anywhere close to it.

So, yeah, definitely think that was the key out there, stay on the fairway. The greens are great. So anyone who's catching a bit of momentum on the greens is going to roll of lot of putts.

Q. You've, of course, played most of your golf this year stateside across the Atlantic. What's it done for your game? Are you the same player we know you to be?

THOMAS DETRY: Yeah, I'm still the same player, same person still. But, yeah, I feel like I've grown a lot, getting better. You know, it hasn't been easy in the States. It's been a lot of traveling back and forth. But I've really enjoyed it, to be honest. It's been great. It's been a lot of fun. And it's great to be back home.
