THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 9, 2023

Jannik Sinner

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

J. SINNER/D. Elahi Galan

7-6, 6-4, 6-3

THE MODERATOR: Welcome to the press conference for Jannik Sinner.

Jannik, good performance today. Give us your thoughts on that match.

JANNIK SINNER: For sure it was a tough match. I tried to stay in the present moment obviously knowing that I was not playing at my best. But still, I tried to stay there with the right attitude.

I know him. He's a very, very nice person, hard worker. Obviously a very, very good player. I knew that it was going to be tough.

Happy to be in the next round.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Back-to-back quarterfinals here. How do you feel about the grass here at Wimbledon? Why is your game suited to it?

JANNIK SINNER: I really like to play here. Also the atmosphere, it is very special. This year maybe even more because I came here with a little bit more preparation on grass. I played one extra or two extra tournaments, so it is a little bit different.

I'm just trying, you know, to stay positive in every moment. Best-of-five obviously is a little bit different. You've got a little bit more time to adapt against every player.

I think everything here, it's very nice, no? People are nice, so it's a good place to be.

Q. How do you have to adapt your game?

JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, for sure it's the movement, which is a very important part of the grass court tennis now. Obviously you have to serve in the right way because the serve is very important. Sometimes to mix up the game a little bit, for sure.

But in the other way, it's very important also that you have to be very friendly with the grass, let's say. Yeah, so I think it's a combination of couple of things.

Q. I was going to have you look ahead to the two possibilities in the next match, Tsitsipas or Eubanks. First saying Stefanos.

JANNIK SINNER: It's Roman.

Q. If you could preview your next match...

JANNIK SINNER: Obviously Roman, it reminds me a little bit of the story of Karatsev in Australia, no? Coming here without losing, playing quite freely. He plays some very, very good tennis.

I played against him one year ago in ATP Cup. It was a very tough match. I'm going to be quite prepared for this one. Obviously it's also mental because it's maybe a little bit different.

But happy to be in the position where I am, obviously. Yeah, hopefully I can show some good tennis. For sure I have to raise my level also from the baseline a little bit, and let's see how it goes.

Q. About being 'friendly with the grass', could you expand on what you mean?

JANNIK SINNER: This is a quote what Darren gave me, Cahill, because you going to have chances, but sometimes there are some (indiscernible) bounces, can be, or you got unlucky a couple of times because your opponent is serving good. You have to always have the right mindset, which is very important. Also sometimes trying to smile because you also have to be very enjoyable to play here.

Yeah, as I said before, the combination of everything is the right thing.
