THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 9, 2023

Marketa Vondrousova

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

M. VONDROUSOVA/M. Bouzkova

2-6, 6-4, 6-3

THE MODERATOR: Great win today. How were you feeling out on the court?

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA: Thank you. It was a very tough match. We played a long match, and we know each other from the very young age, so it was very tough also mentally.

I'm just very happy that I stayed in the match and I stayed focused.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in English.

Q. That was a great match. I was wondering, how did you tell yourself to be patient enough to hit through her defense? Her defense looked like it was kind of annoying.

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA: Yeah, I mean, I know her so I knew what was gonna happen. I just wanted to stay in the match and maybe be, you know, more active and going for the volleys and everything.

I think the match had everything. You know, she played such a great match. We had such long rallies, you know. Yeah, I think also, you know, very physical. I'm just very happy, you know, that I made it (smiling).

Q. Most people might know you as a clay court player, but are you beginning to realize that your game can work really well on grass with the dropshots and volleys and slice and so on?

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA: Yeah, I didn't get many wins on grass before. Now I'm in a quarterfinals, so I wasn't expecting that.

Yeah, I mean, I talked with my coaches before and they told me, you know, You have the game for it.

I think you just have to believe it, you know, be open-minded and just work for it.

Q. You have been through injuries in the past few months. How does it feel to be back in the Grand Slam quarterfinals after the injuries?

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA: Yeah, I didn't play for six months last year, so it was kind of tough. Then you never know what to expect when you're coming back from the injuries. But, I mean, I started pretty well. I think my game was, you know, wasn't so bad after the injuries.

So I just, you know, stayed focused and I practiced as much as I could. Yeah, you know, I just believed that I could be on this level again.
