THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 7, 2023

Paula Badosa

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

M. KOSTYUK/P. Badosa

6-2, 1-0 [Ret.]

THE MODERATOR: Questions in English.

Q. Congrats for your win.

PAULA BADOSA: I lost.

Q. You missed some matches because of injury.

PAULA BADOSA: Yes.

Q. Could you please tell us about your fitness and confidence level, please.

PAULA BADOSA: For your information, I just lost. I didn't win. So, yeah.

THE MODERATOR: She didn't win.

Q. Not win?

PAULA BADOSA: No.

Q. You missed some matches because of injury.

PAULA BADOSA: Yes.

Q. Could you please tell us about your fitness and confidence level.

PAULA BADOSA: Well, I'm not feeling at my best form. I just retired, so yeah, I wish I could feel better.

Q. Would you tell us what the injury is and what your thoughts are and whether you might be able to continue in mixed doubles?

PAULA BADOSA: No, no, I won't be able. The injury is the same as I have been struggling the past weeks. It's the stress fracture.

I tried my best to try to play here, but yesterday when I woke up I already, after my first-round match, felt it again. It's a little bit worse. So I will need a few days off and talk to my team and see what I do in the next days and the next weeks.

Q. Sorry about the outcome today. Obviously from a British perspective, we had Murray playing Stef last night on Centre Court. There was some booing for him when he got back from the toilet break. Obviously the curfew got in the way. What were your thoughts watching it as a spectator and as a supporter of Stef?

PAULA BADOSA: Toilet break? I wasn't there. I don't know what happened. I left in that moment, so I don't know what you're talking about right now.

Q. Was the back injury something that got particularly bad during the match, or was it just felt kind of gradually worse over the last...

PAULA BADOSA: No, first match I was pretty happy because I felt okay. After the match I spoke with my team, and I was, like, it wasn't very bad.

But yesterday, as I said when I woke up, I was worse. Today was worse. I wanted to give it a try in the match, but I think the smartest thing was to stop.

Q. Generally in this tournament, how much of a help has it been having Stef there and be able to kind of support each other?

PAULA BADOSA: Yeah, it's amazing to have him supporting me. As you know, we have a very good relationship. Yeah, I think we support each other and we give each other strength.

Yeah, we're there for each other, so it's nice to have him. But not only in this tournament. It's nice to have him in general.
