THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 24, 2023

Christo Lamprecht

Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. You are our 128th Amateur Champion. How are you feeling?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: I'm kind of over the moon. I haven't kind of won something big in a long time and it's one to win definitely for sure. I'm ecstatic. I cannot kind of comprehend my feelings right now. I'm just over the moon.

Q. Talk to us about the match. There was some -- plenty of good golf played by you and Ronan.

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: Yeah, I think we went back-and-forth quite a bit for a long time and I kind of felt there in the second round, at holes 10, 11, I kind of got myself into a position where I felt really comfortable.

He gave me a really good go at the end, a lot of birdies coming in, and I just playdc really solid golf and I'm proud of that.

Q. You obviously had Christian, your teammate, on the bag, a two-time winning caddie now. How important was he to you over the last to days?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: Yeah, the word caddie is, I guess, insulting him a little bit.

He's an amazing golfer in his own right. He's going to do amazing things and he's probably going to win this championship, as well, in my opinion. Just having him on the bag and having a little bit of experience, we kind of play golf very similarly and kind of approach the game the same way. So having him on there for an extra bit of advice is amazing.

Q. Back-to-back wins for South Africa. That's pretty cool.

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: Yeah, it's always nice to be part of history with South Africa and enrich that history and. yeah, just I love my country.

Q. Major starts coming your way, and plenty of them, the first being at the 151st Open just down the road at Royal Liverpool. Is it hard to comprehend what your year now is going to look like?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: Yeah, it's tough to even think about it. I'm just ready to go home for a little bit and spend some time with family and friends to be really honest with you. So yeah, I'm going to worry about that in three weeks' time.

Q. Is the thought of playing in your first Open Championship pretty special?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: It's amazing. It's probably the biggest kind of milestone I've put myself up for this year before I turn pro hopefully is just to get myself in a major and get that experience. To get into three is pretty amazing, I'm not going to lie.

Q. Aldy making the cut at the U.S. Open, is that inspiring to you?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: I feel like the young golfers coming through these days, as you can see, a couple of guys with their pro debuts wins, too, on the Korn Ferry events. I feel like we are good enough to be there, and we just need to accept it and believe it. So yeah, I can't wait to go and show what I've got.

Q. When you look back on this week, what's going to be your outstanding memory?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: Just the guys being here and kind of everything going my way a little bit. But yeah, there's so many, I can't really bring -- I guess the putt on 17 yesterday (for eagle against Frank Kennedy). That was enormous. I didn't think I was going to win that match. It's kind of a match where I felt I was in control the whole time except until 18. It was special to win.

Q. We've watched that putt on 17, I'm sure, a million times. What about you, how many times have you watched it?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: I hate looking at myself in a camera or a video or see myself talking, so I didn't look at it too much. I just looked at the putt and then kind of stopped looking at it.

Q. You said that Mum and Dad would be watching today. How do you think they are going back home in South Africa?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: I know my mom is probably getting a panic attack for sure. Dad is probably crying for some reason. Yeah, I know they are ecstatic and I can't wait to call them.
