WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 14, 2023

Beth Coulter

Hunstanton, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. Some really lovely golf from you over the past two days here at The Women's Amateur. Have you been happy with your performance so far?

BETH COULTER: Yeah, both days I hit it pretty good. Today I definitely didn't hit it as good as I hit it yesterday but I hit some nice shots coming in and rolled a few putts in to make birdie and hung on for par.

So yeah, I'm pretty happy.

Q. Do you feel like you have a good understanding of the Prince's Golf Course after the past two days?

BETH COULTER: Yeah, I've played it before this week, as well. I mean, I think we have such an advantage playing links golf compared to the Europeans, which is great, especially when it's windy. And I grew up playing links, so yeah.

Q. It's certainly been windy over the past couple of days. Is that something that you hope to see heading into the rest of the week?

BETH COULTER: Yeah, I mean, I guess it's definitely an advantage in the stroke-play but in the match play, it's kind of -- we're on the same field.

So yeah, I mean, I don't mind if it's windy. I like playing in wind and things like that.

Q. It looks last week you will be our top qualifier after the stroke play. Does that fill with you confidence to know that you are atop of the table heading into the match play?

BETH COULTER: Yeah, it's nice but it doesn't mean anything now. Doesn't matter if you're 1 or 64. It's just about qualifying. Obviously it's nice to be top qualifier but yeah, we'll see tomorrow.

Q. Do you think that adds any pressure or a target to your back knowing that you are the top qualifier?

BETH COULTER: I mean, probably a little, but tomorrow is a new day, and it's stroke play today and match play tomorrow, so I'll just kind of forget about it.

Q. As you mentioned, this championship is all about the match play, how do you have to switch your mentality for the rest of the week?

BETH COULTER: Yeah, in stroke play, there are a few holes where you have to be a little careful and there's definitely a few holes that you can go for, like 6, hitting driver and you can get to the green. I mean, we'll see where the pins are tomorrow, and kind of see the strategy for the match play.

Q. Do you like match play as a format?

BETH COULTER: Yeah, love it. We play a lot of match play, obviously, here and in Ireland. It's so competitive and it's so nice to be playing this format.

Q. This is a really long week and there's lots of golf that has to be played. How do you conserve your energy?

BETH COULTER: Yeah, I mean, after we'll do what we want to, and not too much, because it is a long week, and hopefully it is a long week.

So yeah, hit a few putts and conserve all my energy and get sleep tonight.

Q. There is a lot of opportunities on the line for the champion this week. Is it hard not to think about those at the start of the week?

BETH COULTER: Obviously, yeah, they are fantastic opportunities. They are in the back of the mind somewhere but there's not too much thought that goes into it. I guess as the week goes on, it creeps in a little bit more.

Yeah, I think it's fantastic the opportunity that The R&A give us.

Q. Looking at your round specifically today, what were the highlights?

BETH COULTER: At the start, I started off really well. I started, I think I was 2-under through through three or four holes. I holed some really nice putts. But then I had a little run where I let it get away from me a bit and then I hit a great shot into 9 to two feet from like 180. That was a momentum builder for the back nine.

I hit some great shots today but I also hit some silly shots. I guess I can tidy those up this evening and take the positives from today and just move on.
