MIZUHO AMERICAS OPEN

June 1, 2023

Atthaya Thitikul

Jersey City, New Jersey, USA

Liberty National Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. All right, here with Atthaya Thitikul after her first round in the Mizuho Americas Open. Liberty National obviously really iconic course. What did you like about the course today and what was maybe more challenging?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: I mean, as you see, the views is pretty nice. You see the Liberty out there. I mean, the course is really in a good shape.

And then I think like first when I step on the course I think it's seem like a links course more than the actual course. Not much tree that you can see out there on the course, but like so windy as well. Trying to focus what I have to do with the wind.

Q. What does it mean to you to be able to play on a course like this and like some of the other courses coming up on our schedule, Pebble, Baltusrol. How cool is it to get to play courses that are really well-known and iconic?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: Yeah, as a golfer I think we don't play the same course every week. We have to change the course that we have to play every week, that we have to.

So I think it's really challenging to -- you know you don't see the course, you haven't play this course before, and then I love seeing the new course because I don't know what's going to, you know, going on there.

And then hopefully -- I mean, Pebble, it's one of the, you know, my favorite one that I want to be there.

And then also we love playing the, you know, different type of courses.

Q. What about this course this week or today I guess suits your game so well to put up a really good performance like you did?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: Like I said, the course is pretty windy out here. I think commitment, you need to have 100% commitment what you have to do.

You have to aim out, you know, way right or way left to make the wind to help your balls get to the pin. So I think pretty much that's it.

And then also the green, it's pretty slopey, so you have to know where your ball landing or where you put your ball on the green.

Q. Last question: You had a good stretch of birdies like right off the bat, 10, 12, 13. Can you take us through some of those birdies and how you got off to such a great start?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: Yeah, I think it's because of not much wind, because I starting from 10 today, so not much wind on the -- when I start.

So it's like I think too it's par-5. I mean, like two of them is par-5 and one is par-4, so it's reachable par-5 on 10. I think most of the people, you know, go for it in the second shot, so I just go for it and made two-putt.

And 12 and 13, yeah, 13 was a reachable par-5 as well. Just hit it good. Had like a 30 yards like pitch shot there.

Also 12. I think I do like 12 layout though. It's like it's hard layout and you have to decide where you want to go. We're going right today because the pin was on the left, and then, yeah, kind of make the momentum going for today.

Q. I hear the course is a little hard; the hole locations especially in the back nine look to be a little tricky. Do you like it when the conditions are pretty hard? Do you like a challenge?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: I will say I do like easy more than hard. I mean, everyone do like easier course more than hard.

But like when it's hard I feel like it's another challenging, you know, course or challenging one that you has to play, and you have to really be patient on that.

So I think sometime I do like it. Sometime not really, when I'm not playing well.
