ROLAND GARROS

May 28, 2023

Alize Cornet

Paris, France

Press Conference

C. GIORGI/A. Cornet

6-3, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Questions in French.

Q. How do you feel now now that the match is over, after losing during the first round?

ALIZE CORNET: I don't have the impression that on the central court this was a good match, so I'm disappointed I couldn't play the way I wanted.

During the second set, there was some type of opening, she was making more errors, I was feeling better, but then I was not in the match. Her style is putting a lot of pressure on me. I was trying to gain my rhythm, but then I lost.

I didn't serve very well, so it was not very easy for me to control the different points.

Apart from that, nothing really happened during this match. It wasn't great tennis on my side, but she played her match.

The crowd was with me, but that was not sufficient.

Q. What did you expect, more on your side?

ALIZE CORNET: It's a weird question. I never expect anything when I step on the court. I know what I can do. But during a first round of a Grand Slam, you never know what to expect.

Mainly against such an opponent, you can't play against her. I could have played a better match, but I didn't expect anything before.

Q. Would you say that you didn't have enough rhythm? Do you think you have not won enough matches on clay? There was Rome. Were you prepared enough?

ALIZE CORNET: No, I played majors; Madrid, Rome. I was on the list every week to play these matches, more than last year.

But no, whether you find your rhythm or not, you have to be feeling good on D-Day. At Rome I wasn't doing well enough. I didn't serve enough, and I was aggressed immediately by her.

It's as simple as that. I was not good enough, strong enough to win this match.

Q. It was your 19th time at Roland Garros. Would you feel the 20th is something possible? Would you want to do this?

ALIZE CORNET: I don't know. We'll see. The season is going to be long, so that would be in a year. Lots of things can happen in a year.

I have had lots of ups and downs during my career. I'm still there, nonetheless. Even though there were quite a number of lows, I'm still here, but it's a bit of a complicated period for me at present. I understand that I can come back. Sometimes you have to be patient and continue and work and practice.

But a year from now, question mark? I will try and finish my season until the US Open. I will try and play well and do things correctly.

As far as the desire or the appetite is concerned, you can't control this, so that's all I can say this evening.
