PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

May 18, 2023

Steve Holmes

Rochester, New York, USA

Oak Hill Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. What was the experience like for you today?

STEVE HOLMES: It was an absolute thrill. It was really a long-time dream come true, and it's always been a goal of mine to play in a major, to win a major. Not quite there yet, but it was really awesome to play in a major in front of Scottie Scheffler, No. 2 in the world.

Who else was behind me? Gary Woodland. It was just so awesome to be part of the mix out here. Really, really enjoyed it.

Q. It was early on you stuck one pretty close.

STEVE HOLMES: Yeah, I stuffed one in there on 1, hit it about 6 inches. I was, like, let's go, Shaun Micheel, let's go. So that was a good one to not really have to putt on the first hole because I was pretty nervous. I was glad that it was in a full kick-in range.

Q. What were the nerves like for you?

STEVE HOLMES: To be honest, it wasn't too bad. I've been playing a bunch lately in a bunch of tournaments. The tournament there in New Mexico really helped me out kind of being in the mix and being under high pressure.

To be honest, I just have kind of changed my attitude a little bit about it. I'm just going to go out there and enjoy it and accept the good shots, and I'm going to accept the bad shots and just going to move on from there.

There's nothing I can do about it, so just do the best you can.

Q. What does it mean to you to be a PGA professional and represent the PGA of America in this event?

STEVE HOLMES: To be honest, it's a little bit extra pressure because I know there's a lot of guys in the golf shop out there watching going, oh, man, I can beat that guy, you know. A little bit of pressure to not go out there and chop broccoli.

I really appreciate the PGA even giving us a chance to compete out here. I'm one of 20 of 28,000, and most of us are -- I would say the hardest part for me, anyways, playing in these things is -- and I'm sure most PGA professionals are -- we're all helpers. Every single day we're always helping everybody else out, but then when we get to a tournament here, everybody is helping us out. I thought that was pretty cool.

It's really an honor to be a part of it.
