April 20, 2023

Atthaya Thitikul

The Woodlands, Texas, USA

The Club at Carlton Woods

Quick Quotes

Q. Take me through what this first round was like for you at the Chevron Championship.

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: Totally it was nice, but I'd say I was struggling a little bit with my irons, with my approach shots. As we kind of -- I just told myself, just head up and just hang in there and just be patient with it because, like I said, I'm not really confident with my approach shots that much. It's a good result today.

Q. When did you realize you weren't maybe hitting your best, and when did you kind of tell yourself that you were going to be okay with that?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: Yeah, you know, as a golfer if we're not confident with our game, it's going to be a really struggling, but I'm trying to see some good shots and imagine in my head, just close my eyes and see some good shots going to the hole.

Yeah, I think it's worked. The front nine I played not that well, but I had -- going back into the back nine and hit some good shots, and then it gave me momentum going --

Q. There's not much wind today, and it looks like 4-under is going to lead this morning. How hard is this golf course?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: It is hard. It is. As you can see on the scoreboard, 4-under par, compared to other course maybe like 7- or 8-under par going to be leading for the first couple days.

I mean, we not really get used to it, if I can say, because like I said, it's totally different than last year. The grass is different. Not much wind, yes, but the green is not that easy. It's really slopey and tricky.

Q. You said yesterday that your swing wasn't 100 percent. You wanted to call your coach. Were you able to reach your coach, and did they give any advice coming into today?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: Yeah, I mean, I text him every single day, yeah. Now he just awake, too, waiting for me to hit some balls and then see how it's going. But yeah, he just -- sometimes it happens. You're not going to play well every day, every year or every single time. But he told me nothing about the swing that much, just the feeling going into it because I'm not the type of person who thinks about the mechanics, so just feeling out there. He just said, just hang in there.

Q. Is there anything in particular you're going to work on right now?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: Driving range, yes, my irons. It just like go both ways. It's kind of hard to know where should I aim for.

Q. So you shot 2-under; it sounds like it didn't feel like your game was that good. On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you put your game at right now?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: I don't know, 8 today. Yeah, because -- I know, I don't hit that good on the front nine, but I do hit good on the back nine. That's why it came out to be under par.

Q. There's a Thai amateur on the board. I was wondering what you remember about your first major championship and what that felt like.

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: I do. I do. I think my first major was -- I can't remember what year it is, but I think it's the Ricoh British Open in Kingsbarns, I guess. Yeah, and it was really tough course. I think it's like my first or second time playing a links course, and yeah, I missed the cut. But I did enjoy it.

Q. She said she met you earlier this week. Did you meet anyone that week at Kingsbarns that sticks out?

ATTHAYA THITIKUL: Well, not really. Not really much. I'm so sorry. Maybe in Evian or Kingsbarns, I forgot which one is my first. I forgot, sorry. Not really. Just Kingsbarns, just I'm so young and I just go and play. Even I forgot who I paired with.
