WGC DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY

March 23, 2023

Lucas Herbert

Austin, Texas, USA

Austin Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Another big win today. Your thoughts on your play and in the match against Tyrrell?

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, obviously Tyrrell's a quality player, so I knew I was going to be in for it today. I don't think he played the way he would have liked. He just couldn't get many putts to role in on the back nine.

I just hung in there. I didn't sort of -- didn't let him get too far away. I could have got two or three down there around the turn. I just didn't let him get away. Then when I got my chances towards the end, just took 'em. So I'm really proud of the way I did that.

Q. Two points on the board. Obviously in the driver's seat going into tomorrow. Just your mentality heading into tomorrow.

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, it feels like Sunday. I mean, I was in the same position last year and lost and then lost the playoff. So I'm very aware that I need to play better than I did last year. I need to have a different mindset to what I did last year.

I want to finish 3-0 and get through to that next round and be playing on Saturday. So the way to do that is to make sure I win tomorrow, don't give anything up, don't give the other guys a chance. That's a good position to be in.

Q. How big is a week like this, obviously coming off THE PLAYERS, this being your next event, bouncing back in a massive way going into Augusta and kind of a huge stretch of the season?

LUCAS HERBERT: Well, an Augusta invite is still waiting for me. I need to play well this week to get that locked up, so that's another incentive as well.

But obviously, had a couple of tough weeks there at Bay Hill and PLAYERS. I felt like I was playing better than that. I just had some really big weeks with a lot of stuff that was just going on in life. So it's sort of been good to get a little week off last week and just kind of get away from all that and just building some confidence again this week.

It's been nice to hit some shots where I think they should go again and to get the putter rolling again. It's been nice to feel like I'm back in a way.

Q. Not having everything in front of me and being relatively dumb anyway, what happened in the playoff last year? What happened on Friday and then into the playoff?

LUCAS HERBERT: I played Kanaya, a Japanese kid. He beat me 5 & 4 I think pretty comfortably during the round. So then we were into a playoff and I think I 4-putted the first playoff hole. Just didn't deal with the entire day well at all, to be honest. Then really didn't handle my nerves well in the playoff either. As much as it is a great position to be in being 2-0, I got work to do tomorrow. So got to make sure I'm on top of it. Yeah, control my own destiny tomorrow.

Q. Might it help a little bit in a way, knowing what happened last year, that you can fall into the trap of feeling comfortable?

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, comfort's the devil in golf, I think.

Q. What is comfort?

LUCAS HERBERT: Comfort's the devil in golf, I think. There's probably not a worse place to get into.
