March 23, 2023

Mackenzie Hughes

Austin, Texas, USA

Austin Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Pretty dominant win for you today. What would you say was working best for you.

MACKENZIE HUGHES: You know, the last two days I've driven it really nice, which on this golf course you feel like gives you a lot of opportunities. Yesterday I didn't really turn those into birdies, and today I did.

Some nice tee shots on 5, 6, to go birdie-eagle there, and kind of just like was able to capitalize on being in good position today, and certainly made a couple nice putts to get myself going and to get that lead.

Yeah, it was kind of nice because I was telling PGA TOUR radio that I don't know for the last month or so I feel like I've been on the wrong end of scoring, just kind of not getting any momentum going, and today I kind of got some momentum going and was able to kind of roll some nice holes together, so that was really nice to see and good for the confidence.

Q. What do you feel like over the last month or so has been maybe missing in your game?

MACKENZIE HUGHES: Honestly, just like a spark. Like something -- like a couple nice putts go in early in the day to get yourself going, make a nice par putt. But just momentum, really. Like LA and Bay Hill, finished like 50th both weeks, but just felt like I was really close to shooting 69 but shot 72, and it's an up-and-down here and a 10-footer there.

I just have been kind of losing that momentum battle a little bit, and today was kind of nice to see some good stuff go down.

Q. Even though it's just one match, can that maybe help you further this week?

MACKENZIE HUGHES: For sure it does. I've seen nice things in my game, even yesterday losing to Jordan, that I've liked, and today same good things, but obviously nicer to come out with a win, and certainly gives you a boost beating a guy like Shane Lowry who's Open Champion and has a great resume. Those are always feathers in the cap.

Q. What's your mentality with your match tomorrow?

MACKENZIE HUGHES: Yeah, I mean, it's kind of -- I don't know what's going on right now. I think the last I heard, Taylor was up. It would be kind of nice if that was the case and he was able to prevail, then tomorrow have the chance to kind of control my own destiny a little bit. I'd have to beat him and then there would be obviously a playoff.

That would be kind of fun, to have that scenario play out, but we'll see what happens, and regardless, it'll be a tough match because he's been playing really well this year.
