WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC: POOL C - COLOMBIA VS GREAT BRITAIN

March 13, 2023

Chavez Young

Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Chase Field

Team Great Britain

Pregame Press Conference

Q. Take me through the steal at home yesterday. Was that a play that was put on or did you see the throw go down to second and you took off?

CHAVEZ YOUNG: I'm anticipating to score. That's my goal on third base, I'm anticipating to score. I see the ball release and I had to go. You have to be aggressive early, especially with these great teams. These Major League-caliber players, you've got to be aggressive and try to get some runs on the board for the team.

Q. The energy that you bring to the clubhouse, just as who you are as a person and what you do at the top of the lineup, how important do you think that is to kind of set the tone for the rest of your guys?

CHAVEZ YOUNG: Baseball is already hard. Don't make it too difficult. The main goal is to have fun. You tell the kids, when they're young, have fun, right? And when you have fun, just be relaxing, just be yourself. And when you do those little things, stuff happens.

But I know that I bring the energy to the team. A lot of Bahamians bring a lot of energy to the team, and I know how important it is for us.

Q. For folks that aren't aware on a global stage about Bahamian baseball, how big is baseball in the Bahamas to the culture?

CHAVEZ YOUNG: It's growing, everybody want to be in the big leagues and wants to get signed, play professional baseball. And I think it's important for the Bahamian players that are in pro baseball to set a great example for the young kids that are coming up, because it's a lot more talent. And talented kids in the Bahamas start coming up and signing.

Q. I believe the first Major Leaguer from the Bahamas was Ed Armbrister. Does he hold a high regard in the Bahamas due to that?

CHAVEZ YOUNG: I wasn't even born yet. But, yes, we have respect to all our legends. We call them, they're our legends. One I can remember is Antoan Richardson when he got called up. And he was part of one of the biggest historic things in baseball when Derek Jeter hit the base hit, his last base hit, walk-off. And that stuff means a lot to our country. So we cherish them a lot.
