Team USA

Press Conference

USA - 2

Germany - 0

THE MODERATOR: Congratulations, Team USA, on reaching the semifinals. David, perhaps you could give us some initial thoughts.

CAPTAIN WITT: It was awesome. Taylor came out on fire, was playing well. Good intensity. Stayed on him. Good way to start us off.

Maddie came out there, played excellent.

It was a good day.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Taylor, how did you feel after that match?

TAYLOR FRITZ: I felt pretty good. I think it was tough to I guess judge my level because I do feel like he's coming back from injury, he's a bit rusty. He was giving me a good amount of free points.

I'm really happy with it. I'm sure it won't take him too long for him to kind of fully get his form back.

Q. How important has it been to get these sort of confidence boost-building wins at the start of the season?

TAYLOR FRITZ: It's great to start the year off with some wins, for sure. I think just the confidence aspect of tennis is super important. Especially going to Australian Open, coming off of off-season, it's good to start with some wins.

Q. Maddie, what about yourself? How do you feel you played? Looked like you were right on the money today.

MADISON KEYS: I mean, yeah, I think I played pretty well today. I think kind of similar to Taylor, I got a lot of free points. I don't think she'll be absolutely thrilled with how she played today. At the same time I had to take care of my side of the net. I think I did that pretty well.

I kept the pressure on her, was able to play a pretty solid match.

Q. Do you look ahead at all to the situation with the way the charts are sitting?

MADISON KEYS: Have no idea what's going on. I'm literally just being told where to show up, at what time, and that's what I do (smiling).

Q. David, you must be terribly satisfied with the way things are going. Your team hasn't lost a single singles match so far.

CAPTAIN WITT: Yeah, my player did.

MADISON KEYS: Jess lost.

CAPTAIN WITT: Jess lost.

I think going into this, we have such a good team, their confidence is at a high. I think just qualifying is not what we're here for. I think it's to win. I think not just the whole thing, every match. We're putting our best foot forward. We're going to try to win every match 5-0, if we can.

Q. (Question regarding the usefulness of the tools and statistics available to the coaches.)

CAPTAIN WITT: For the match, not really. I've been using it to kind of focus in on Dennis' bald head, something like that (smiling).

No, I think the iPad for me, I like to look at the stats like that. I think the more you use that thing you're talking about, the rewind, forward, backwards, you got to play with it a little bit to kind of get used to it.

But I kind of use the iPad a little more.
