ICC T20 WORLD CUP 2022

October 27, 2022

Shakib Al Hasan

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Sydney Cricket Ground

Bangladesh

Post Match Media Conference

South Africa - 205/5, Bangladesh - 101

Q. Shakib, did you think there was anything different you could have done out there to try and stop particularly Rilee Rossouw, who got away from you there. Were there any other the tactics you could have tried?

SHAKIB AL HASAN: Yeah, we had a certain plan for a certain batsmen. Obviously we had some plan against Rilee, especially with their fast bowlers. I think at the start of the innings we didn't bowl those balls that we wanted to bowl, especially with our fast bowlers. And once a batsman is set in T20 cricket, we know how dangerous a batsman he can be. And that's exactly what he showed today.

But we haven't got much chance to reflect on the game. But I mean credit goes to Rilee and Quinton de Kock, I think that partnership took the game away from us.

Q. There was a moment where South Africa were awarded five penalty runs for perhaps a wicket moving during delivery. What was the discussion with the umpires after that took place?

SHAKIB AL HASAN: We didn't know why the five-run penalty was given. It wasn't given at the start. Then the leg umpire comes in and says when I was about to bowl, the wicket-keeper went back one step. That's what I have to rebowl again. So that was the discussion.

Q. You were saying ahead of this game that you and the team were feeling very confident. How easy will it be to lift the team ahead of the next game against Zimbabwe after suffering such a big loss? And secondly, very quickly, did you think the balance of the team today was good in terms of the team selection?

SHAKIB AL HASAN: I think, in terms of team selection, looking at the opponent, looking at the condition and pitch, today's team selection was spot on. South Africa did the same thing also. We cannot worry about that. And the first question was...

Q. About the confidence of the team.

SHAKIB AL HASAN: I mean, yes. Obviously when you lose by this margin, it is difficult. But we cannot sit back and say, okay, we are done. We have three more matches, three more very important matches to be played. And I'm sure everyone will be looking forward to the next game. If we do well in the next game and we'll go on to the next one.
