ICC T20 WORLD CUP 2022

October 20, 2022

Ryan Burl

Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

Bellerive Oval

Zimbawae

Pre Match Media Conference

Q. Big day tomorrow for Zimbabwe; all teams equal in the group, but obviously you guys look to be the team in great form. What are the things that'll make a difference for a Zimbabwe win tomorrow?

RYAN BURL: I think to be honest, first and foremost is just us getting the job done, to be honest. It's a must-win game for both teams -- well, all four teams, to be honest, in the group. Yeah, we've just got to rock up on the day, make sure we put our best foot forward and ensure we get the win.

Q. Ryan, yesterday obviously Zimbabwe had a chance around middle of the West Indies innings from that point onwards. Where do you think you guys lost the game? Do you think that turning point was?

RYAN BURL: To be honest, I don't think it was a case of us losing the game. I think it was more of a case of the West Indies team absolutely winning the game for them. Their seamers were exceptional. If you look at the mode of our dismissals, I think they got about six or seven wickets just from keen bowling us. They executed their yorkers really well, and yeah, I think kind of backed up the stat where I think it's 70 odd per cent of games where people bat first end up winning at this ground.

I think obviously the toss is going to be quite key, and like I said, obviously putting our best foot forward to ensure we win.

Q. About the Scotland team, they've also beaten West Indies but they lost yesterday. Do you see them a bit of a top-heavy side with a good top order or do you think their bowling is also quite good, as well?

RYAN BURL: To be honest, I think obviously we've seen their batting has come through quite a lot. They've got some very tricky spinners in their attack. They're quite clever.

But at the end of the day, we've got to execute our plans. They're going to go out there wanting to get the win and execute their plans, and I think it's just key that we stay calm under pressure and we make sure that we keep doing the right things for a long period of time.

Q. How big would be progress to the Super 12s for Zimbabwe?

RYAN BURL: I think it goes without saying that it's a massive achievement for any team in the group. That's obviously our goal coming into this group stage. Just to make sure you do whatever you can to ensure that you're the top two going through.

Q. You've obviously bowled quite well recently, and you have a role with the bat down the order. Do you feel that something is brewing for Ryan Burl in the next match, a big performance coming up?

RYAN BURL: Yeah, hopefully. I mean, obviously kind of playing that role of an allrounder, you can kind of at least try and come to the party in one aspect of the game. I haven't really made an impact yet, but a good performance is just around the corner. Hopefully it's a match-winning one, and just do something that ensures that Zimbabwe get the victory and go through to the next stage.

Q. A lot of people believe when Ryan Burl gets going it's very hard to stop him, and we've seen that this year, that there have been a number of occasions when you just went for it with the bat. I'm sure you are really itching for a big one, especially tomorrow, that will make a huge difference?

RYAN BURL: Yeah, massively. I think I'm due, due a bit of runs. It would be nice to kind of put Zimbabwe in a winning position, and yeah, like I said, just honestly really, really keen to just go out there and put a performance in for the country.

Q. What's the mood been like since come to Australia, because you guys came on a high. You did well against a number of teams.

RYAN BURL: Yeah, the mood is good in the camp. I think there's obviously a little bit of nerves and stuff kind of around the group now, just knowing that we've got to win the next game. But no, the morale is good. Guys are very upbeat, and like I said, we just want to kind of get this last game out of the way and ensure we're through to the next stage.

Q. Wesley Madhevere, quite an impressive start to his career. Yesterday he started very well. How have you see him progressing over the last couple of years?

RYAN BURL: Yeah, Wesley is an incredibly talented young individual. He's obviously got a lot of potential. He'd obviously like to kind of convert those stats into something big, but just like a few of us, I think a big score is just around the corner, and he's such a good player. A big score is just around the corner. It's just a matter of when, it's not a case of if or anything like that. It's just on the day, just something will click, and yeah, he's working hard on and off the field, and obviously some big performances are in his locker, and hopefully tomorrow is going to be one of them.
