Yu Darvish

Q. Yu, since your last outing, were you preparing to go on short rest to get ready to pitch, and how was that preparation different, and does that affect your preparation at all now that you're getting the full rest?

YU DARVISH: Yes, so I was getting ready just in case for our Game 5, so it was kind of a little bit hard because I was sort of testing things out as far as preparation goes. But luckily we didn't have to go there.

I did throw a bullpen yesterday, and it felt good. Really looking forward to going into the game tomorrow.

Q. What do you see as the differences between how you would attack the Dodger lineup versus this Phillies lineup now? What's the difference in approach in trying to get runs across?

YU DARVISH: Yeah, I'll just keep it to there's a lot of differences between the two teams. I obviously can't go into details of that here in front of everybody.

Yeah, I feel like there are a lot of differences.

Q. The Padres have been trying to get past the Dodgers for so long; how do you avoid in this series collectively not looking back but looking forward?

YU DARVISH: I can't talk for everybody else, but as far as myself, yeah, there is a sense of satisfaction being able to beat the Dodgers and being here. But obviously this is not the end of the road for us. We've got more games to play.

That's where my focus is. Kind of plain and simple.

Q. I know you like to talk about new challenges and how much of you enjoy them. I know it didn't happen, but potentially pitching on short rest, did you enjoy the preparation for that? And what was Game 4 like for you knowing that if the result went one way you had to pitch the next day?

YU DARVISH: Yes, so as the game went on, you're watching the game in the dugout, and this was before we scored five runs. I was talking with Clev and those guys that maybe I should go ahead to LA, just be ready if there's going to be a Game 5. Also, during the game, I would go into the weight room and do some workout stuff that I usually wouldn't do if it was regular rest.

There were some things that I would not normally do, but it was a good experience, and I think it was all fine.

Q. When the Padres traded for you, was that a move that you were expecting? Did you think that the Padres would be a team that came after you? What were your first impressions once you got here?

YU DARVISH: Yeah, so I just remember that I was really surprised because it was something that happened so suddenly as far as the trade goes.

But I knew that it was a team that was capable of making it into the World Series, and that said, I guess I can say I was happy about it.

Q. I know you watch a lot of video of the other hitters to prepare; I was wondering, in a case like this, facing the Phillies tomorrow, is most of that video here in the ballpark in your clubhouse? Do you take homework home? Do you watch video of the Philly hitters last night or tonight? How do you go about that?

YU DARVISH: All the information, all the video is on an iPad, so I can basically watch it wherever, whenever I want to.

Sometimes during dinner as I'm having conversation with my wife, I'll be taking a peek at the iPad and looking at the video a little bit.

Yes, it's with me at all times, and I basically look at it whenever I want to.

Q. Back to the potential Game 5 situation, was that a conversation you initiated with the team, or did the team initiate it with you, and how did that go?

YU DARVISH: Yeah, so I was having conversation with Ruben, our pitching coach, and he had mentioned that you have Game 1 of NLCS, and this was before Game 4, and I countered him that if there is going to be a Game 5, then am I not going to start that game.

I think Ruben -- that was a conversation I had with Ruben, and he took that back, and I think he probably had a conversation with Bob on that, as well.

I think the conversation -- I guess that if we don't start Yu on Game 5, he's probably going to get mad. So we should probably think about him going in Game 5. That's kind of the story behind that.
